1.
You see that round yellow thing at the end of my sentence that looks like it's winking? Strangely enough, it is.

FWIW, yes, you probably should see the Musical Box if you like early Genesis. Phil Collins sat in with them and said he was the worst thing in them, which as a member of the original band he was rather embarrassed about.

With regards to quality/material, I think I've already covered that ad infinitum. I'll assume you read my other posts. I reckon Dave will back me up. :)

No problem re the response. We aim to please. :P (that was a wink again BTW).
Don't drag me into this - :)

I can however identify with the issue. :D

All good fun.

2. Sorry mate. No tricks for that one.
Had several over the years even to the point i broke skin and had blood over the bass from my index finger - ouch !

It did force me to learn how to play with my other idle fingers and now use all if need be although not as good. No laughing there please :)

3. Do much the same.
Whatever feels comfortable for a particular song.

Think you'll find Geddy Lee and Jack Bruce use a similar style depending on what mood or song they are playing.
Geddy Lee also uses a floating hand technique on occasion whereby he doesn't rest his thumb at all.

If it suits and it works use it.

Cheers

4.
Of course if a "cover band" did unusual and interesting arrangements of cover songs, then that might be different. I like the concept of a band like Hayseed Dixie, because they have an identity of their own, which I think is my issue. I prefer bands and musicians to have an identity, and I feel many cover bands don't. Of course a good tribute band has someone else's identity, but at least it's still an identity. :P
Would probably agree with you when you put it as an identity issue. I can see your point.
Took a while but we got there. :)
With some cover bands it could be anyone playing on that stage. And to coin your earlier phrase "Musical Jukebox" there is generally no "show" to relate to with a covers band whereas a tribute or originals band have something specific to watch and hear.

PS : Yep. I was splitting hairs earlier - got your attention though and its all part of the show. :) :D

To answer 2 comments (and I'm rather disappointed that I have to explain this; if you can't tell the difference between The Musical Box and the typical band playing down the pub on a Friday I'm really not sure you should be playing :P ), a tribute band, whilst obviously playing covers, are attempting to emulate everything about a particular band, from the music, to the exact performance, to the look, as accurately as possible and so invest in the audience a feeling of what it might be like to see the real band in their heyday. It goes far beyond "playing the songs", if nowhere near as far as creating the art in the first place. It is often done from a place of real love of the original band, and is often done with a sense of perfectionism.

Have done the originals tours and also covers within original bands and have been playing since late 70's.
Huge fan of early Genesis and most other music and quite open minded when it comes to bands and musicians.
Based on what you described above as a tribute band Musical Box, although very talented musicians, don't exactly look like Genesis. ?
Therefore you have a group of guys covering early Genesis songs who just happen to be very good at playing them.
To be honest they are very good and i would pay to see them. :)

No different to a group of guys covering various acts provided they do them well.
Where do you draw the line ? :D

Yes there is a difference between a tribute band playing well and a covers band playing badly and vice-versa.

Is your gripe not more to do with quality and that you've been very unlucky to have only seen poor musicians doing covers.

Just read your response to my other post and you highlight the quality as being the issue.
Provided covers are done well within an originals band you have no issue.

Quality then :)

6.
isn't WD40 mostly fish oil?
I think you are right. A few yrs ago someone sent me an advert stating what WD40 could do and the guy did actually drink it although he did say not to try this at home.
We use WD40 in Engineering for just about everything and it doesn't damage any materials that we've found.

Cheers (pun !!!!) :)

7. Yep I know Haydn from Overwater and he's a top guy as are all the guys at Overwater.
Saw his guitars at Moffat Bass Bash and some really nice kit.
My guitarist mate is big 50 this year and will be recommending Haydn to him.
He's looking for something special for his birthday and this could be exactly what he is looking for.

Thanks for the reminder.

Cheers

8.
I don't class tribute bands as cover bands
Don't quite follow your reasoning on that one ? :)
DTK are by far the best tribute band I've seen and as stated in this thread probably better than the originals.

If you went to an originals concert and they played a cover song would you leave.

Many original bands have over the yrs covered someone else's material.

If you look at many of the major bands "live set list" you will regularly find covers thrown in.
Don't see any harm provided its done well.

Rush produced a full covers album (Crossroads) - didn't make them inferior or worse musicians.

How does that work with Genesis when you had Phil Collins singing old Peter Gabriel material. ?
Does that count as a cover. :D

Is there not a happy balance whereby you play both your own material and some covers and provided you are good pull in the max audience - i think that's a plan

9. I would definately pay to see a good cover band.
Cetera's Kiss tribute band "Dressed to Kill" played at a local venue with 2 other bands.
400+ people attended at £13.50 a ticket. Very busy night.

All tribute / cover bands. All were good and i would go back to see them again.

DTK do put on a great show and you are paying for the show as well as the competency of the musicians.

There's not much chance of Kiss playing locally or even in Scotland. Maybe this is the next best thing.

I also have friends playing as a Led Zep tribute band and tour abroad regularly with this act.

They are always well packed at their venues.

Must be a demand for it !

Agree with most comments that if the band are good they will pull an audience.

10.
Marriage :)
Surely your bass technique has developed to the point whereby your selective hearing mode, compression and clipping removes the extreme white noise from the spouse drone.

11. Guess I have been lucky and may be that the bands I've played with were not as loud as i thought.

From what I've been told your hearing can be affected by many different things from loud music, motorcycle wind noise, machinery noise or even illness and will affect mainly one frequency of the hearing spectrum depending on what the noise is. The specialist who completes the checks can usually pinpoint why your particular frequency is down in that area.

It is not normally a sudden loud noise but usually continuous high levels of noise that cause hearing loss.

Guess i was just a bit curious.

Thanks
Dave

12.
I am often found behind one of the PA speakers.
To be politically correct and not wanting to offend you - is that not the "socially unnice to look at" corner --- :) :D

That's where you'll find me then :)

13. While reading the "Stage Positions - where to stand" thread it occured to me that many bassists stand in a specific stage area because of deafness in one ear.

Any particular reason why ? :)

I've played in bands for over 30 yrs including loud rock bands and have no hearing issues that i've heard about
I get tested every 2 yrs through my job. I work in engineering with high decibel levels of machinery noise.

Just curious :)

14.
Dave, if you wouldn't mind I'd love to make the trip from Balfron to Lanark to hear this wonderful rig when it arrives.

Maybe you'd even be good enough to let me bring my bass and try it out as I am seriuosly thinking of going down the very same route ( 900 and 2 cabs - or possibly the new Aggy stuff as an option ) you were originally going down. I'd be sooo interested to hear this.

thanks
Stewart
Appreciate the replies.
I'm quite excited about the new rig. Not sure when it will arrive but just adds to the excitement i guess. :) :D

Stewart
I'll try and remember when it arrives and drop you a PM. From what Mark at Bass Direct advised the 600 and 1 cab is more than enough although some guys prefer the 2nd cab and have returned for it. I guess I'll trial and error it first and take it from there.
Where is Balfron ???

:)
Cheers
Dave

15. Have just ordered a Genz Benz Streamliner 600 with Berg AE112 cab from Bass Direct.
Mark was excellent. Returned my calls when he was busy, answered all my email queries almost instantly even late in evening.

Was originally looking at the 900 and 2 cabs but after discussing with Mark i agreed with him that i wouldn't need that size of rig unless i was playing very large venues at loud volumes.
He saved me quite a bit of money with his advice.
Really nice guy and very helpful.

Now i just have to wait impatiently until its delivered.

This is my 1st new amp in 7 yrs and really excited and looking forward to trying it out at rehearsal ASAP.

Dave

16.
Yes, agree, it was only the one FS so I assumed that the price of two would be the the figure I guestimated, IF I could find another one quickly.
They retain a premium as there aren't that many around although maybe these come along like London buses...

As far as the AE212 goes that has better value compared to its supposed competitors like GB NEOX for example, possibly in the GB market.

The good news is that I can fit a AE212 in my car boot.... but I think I have sourced a repair for my current cabs so I am just trying to stave off GAS :)
I'm afraid GAS got the better of me yesterday and i went for a new AE112 & GB Streamliner 600 from Bass Direct.
Thought about 2nd hand but most of the gear i was looking for was quite far South and cost of fuel to pick up would take me to almost new price.
Main reason i went for the AE112 was i couldn't fit my existing gear in the new car. Didn't think about that when i bought the car. Huge boot but only 16" opening. Good excuse to buy some new gear. :)
Not many shops up here that stock a decent quantity of quality gear.

Good luck with the search

Cheers
Dave
