1. Is there a definitive list of fuzzes and overdrives that are and aren't suitable for (mainly) active and passive basses? I've read a bit on here about impedance buffers and suchlike but my understanding is quite basic when it comes to this so any info compiled would be really useful. Cheers
2. stringthis.com you buy em bulk packed and you can get em pretty cheap but the orders have to be quite substantial
3. did anybody have any success with different types of pick? playing was murder last night for the first time in ages it was hot under the lights and i'd had a couple of cups of coffee so i put it down to dehydration again
4. i've played two gigs in one night in two bands before but it's a pain in the @rse and i wouldn't advocate unless you're either i) mental or ii) earning loads of money out of both of them edit: why can't you put "b)" without it turning into
5.
just saw this on thomann http://www.thomann.de/gb/ashdown_t15_180s.htm looks like a halfway house between the electric blue and the mag range, plenty o volume and the di that you want and under 200 as it has 40% off, nice
i saw those in their mailer - looks like it's been made exclusively for them
6. I've got a (few years old) S1 Precision bass in black - it was near mint when i bought it and developed lots of buckely type scratches all over the back in the lacquer - i only wear a belt when i wear a suit or work clothes so i've never played it with a belt on - i'm guessing it's caused by shirt buttons and whatnot. I've also got a stingray which was like new when i got it - it was literally unused and despite my best efforts, has pretty much remained in a similar condition - also black is there a difference in finish or the top layer on the bodies between musicman and fender and is there a way of cutting the lacquer back (ie with the bass version of t cut!) to remove the scratches? Not that I'm bothered of course, but if i was to sell it, it would be nice to sell it clean
7. yeah i play bass in one band and guitar in another. both bands know the band i play bass in is my priority and i cancel the guitar gigs if i have a bass gig - even though the guitar gigs are guaranteed income and there's usually bugger all chance of getting paid playing the bass in my originals band we're sort of fortunate that i play guitar with another guy so if i can't go, he can usually cover my parts
8. in the UK - www.axesrus.com and brand F guitar parts as well which sell Fender branded stuff - can't remember the URL
9. anybody else had a listen and is that kick annoying you as much as it is me, slapping about in the mix somewhere?!
10. Well last night I went to Quad in Leicester with my band Jee-zuss - talk about quality, the place is in a huge old textile mill, with a massive front of house area carpeted throughout with nice rugs which stop the sound bouncing off shiny floors and crucially, despite the fact that they've got 8 (full) rooms you couldn't hear a thing out in the big lobby area. The room we had was completely acoustically treated with a small scale version of the stuff on the Albert Hall ceiling and all the walls had been acoustically damped and again with the rugs on the floor and the mic cables routed underneath them so you didn't spend all evening tripping over them The gear - BIG Mackie PA, crystal clear and with SM58s that didn't smell like a dogs @rse - Ashdown Peacemaker 2x12 guitar amp and a cornford hurricane 1x12 (lovely) and the bass rig was Mark Bass 410 and SA850 or something (I didn't pay much attention other than it sounded excellent!!) I was properly blown away by it. 15 quid an hour seemed expensive but i think it's worth every penny - that's precisely the sort of feel that i would want to go for if i could get the space. Yer man who runs it also had a proper spares shop selling tubes, strings, straps, picks, proper attenuating earplugs etc (although 60 quid for a 5 string set of elixirs is a bit pricey!) + a proper cafe just sharing!!
11.
You're lucky in that you always have in house PAs. If you have your own [vocal] PA and rely on your bass amp (and guitar and drums)for FOH sound then it's quite critical
absolutely agree - we're not the sort of band that have to go and run our own gigs or do our own sound - we're playing the local toilet circuit which, fortunately have pretty decent sound systems and engineers. I'm sure it would be a totally different story if we went and did our own thing.
12.
Here is my rig. Modular, with a Littlemark 2, driving a Traveler 102p and a Standard 102HF. For rehearsals/small gigs, the traveler is the one, and I use both when things get serious. I stand the traveler on its side to get it up close to my ears. And it all sounds rather lovely, whilst being super light. I will gladly answer any questions for those who want ot know more about this gear. Chris
crikey - that traveler is tiny what's it like its own? I could do with some super small kit like that
13. Usually behind me on a couple of crates, location depends on i) how much room have i got? ii) how long are my leads (i don't want to have miles of lead all over the stage) Most of the venues we play have got proper monitoring so placing it so that it can be heard isn't so much of an issue as long as the band can hear it and i can hear it and reach it, i'm happy. on a stage, the three of us (guitar, guitar/vox, bass/vox) are up at the front with front man in the middle, he's left handed and has already taken a chip out of my precision headstock so i want to stand on his left hand side, which sometimes causes a problem for the guitarist on the far right of the stage with regard to hearing what i'm doing, but i can't say it's ever been a problem or something i thought needs addressing.
14. once - on a big stage i used someone's 4 ohm ampeg 6x10 (possibly 8x10) with my abm 300 thingy it was fckin loud i know that much. i'd set my output at about 12 o'clock thinking, "it'll be alright, it's a big room and a big stage" (pro venue at loughborough uni). i was politely requested to turn down by the FOH soundman. Sounded really good.
15. cheers - the indulgent parts were basically the real nasty hammondy/farfisa organ bits on english skies and the slide parts for which we wheeled in a special guest. cheers for listening, feedback much appreciated
16. wicked!! they do all sorts of stuff look http://www.borntorock.com/ well A guitar and A bass I suppose it's not quite "loads"
17. it was.... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showuser=246 yeah i remember he said they were ace as well. I might try a couple of sets
18. i didn't think you were supposed to be charged duty on anything under 36 quid? sounds like you paid about £2.31 duty and a tenner to those lovely people who delivered it to you sounds like you got a good result though whatever the cost
19. can i have the other half please? Little consolation I know, but my ABM EVO 300 has never been a problem - apart from the one I was going to buy, which didn't work and then the first one I bought the pretty light up but completely useless VU meter didn't work - I suppose that should have told me something at the time, but I love the sound of it and a second cab would make it sound even better I reckon. Plus, PMT were doing 10 months 0% which made sense and they didn't stock anything else I really fancy, like the MB traveler size stuff
20. has anybody tried Roberts strings? Their Flatwounds seem quite cheap and might be worth a bash to try the flatwound experience Currently got a set of halfrounds on my precision - take a listen to barbara ann on our myspace (www.myspace.com/27brigade, although it's had the protools treatment. the precision might sound great with a set of flats on this song - particularly in the quite bit with the country style slide on
21. spent the weekend in the studio, went a bit mental with a couple of tracks and got a bit indulgent if you fancy a listen (would appreciate the feedback), go to www.myspace.com/27brigade and enjoy yourselves. love twist the gift is an old track (recorded last year) and features my old MIJ precision new songs are: Carillon Park (Stingray) Barbara Ann (S1 Precision) English Skies (Stingray) Platform Lovers (Stingray) You probably won't be able to distinguish the basses that well, but it's the songs I am most interested to hear what you think. The 4 above replace the demo versions previously on our page if you heard them. Ta
22.
Hi John. I know the person I used to deal with at Livingston left last month so I'm not sure who's there now. I'm just about to email an order (to Germany) so I'll ask if they've heard anything about Polywebs losing their coatings easily. I use Nanowebs and they do flake a little occasionally but nothing serious. Mine have been about six months and are worn in places but I have been playing a lot lately. Still sound fresh though. Cheers, Alun
Cheers Alun, that would be great - I emailed the UK and German address and also the distributor (whose name I forget), but haven't had a reply. If you do find anything out, that would be great Ta John
23. preumsably a switchable one would be preferable for switching between active/passive basses? What's the proposed cost and are there any audio examples of how the buffer assists (ie fuzz with and without the buffer)? Are there any mass produced examples as a comparison (not intending to rush out and buy one)
24. cool cheers BOD2, that's most helpful the LEDS from maplin are a quid each and based on the spec will need a couple of 200 ohm resistors. got a busy couple of weeks - but will stick a shiny pic of the newly lit switch!
