  1. Don’t be precious about the sound on stage. If it seems like the stage sound won’t be great then as long as you can hear what you want to hear that’s enough. Don’t spend hours in sound check chasing the unattainable. It will probably sound different when you play anyway.

Don’t concern yourself with FOH sound. 99% of people won’t care and won’t notice that special pedal you used on the middle 8 of the fourth song. You won’t hear the FOH sound anyway. Unless you’re doing your own sound.

ALWAYS change your clothes before playing. Even if it’s just a different t-shirt. At least look like you’re making an effort and haven’t just walked in off the street.

Take spare shoes. If it’s hammering down during load-in you don’t want wet feet al night.

Make sure all of your gear is working before the gig.

Always stretch before you play. Hands are most important but arms, legs, neck, anything else is also important if you do anything more than stand still. Especially as you get older.

  2. I’ve bought a few things from them over the last few years with no problems.

I recently bought a pedalboard which they tried to deliver whilst I was out. Didn’t leave a card or anything so I didn’t know they’d been until I check the tracking the next day. All that said was that it had been delivered to a loc Post Office, which wasn’t especially helpful.

Of course this is a courier issue but, as I didn’t know who the courier was (tracking site was an unbranded German thing), I contacted DV247 who looked at the info and told me exactly where it was to go and pick up.

  3. I’ve always used a click in the studio as I think it’s the best way to get everything tight.

Never used one live but I just started jamming with a new band who are all on IEMs and have some bits on tracks, which includes a click. I haven’t once noticed (apart from breaks where it’s just tracks or maybe one guitar) the click whilst playing and the drummer, who has been doing this in other bands for years, tells me that you’ll only notice the click if you go out of time with it. Which makes sense.

I'm tempted by the new Sire P5. Fretboard seems like a dream - but I really don't like the colour options on the body. Figured I could sort that by literally covering it in stickers. Wondering how to do this and avoid them peeling. Do po

people put varnish over them or something?

    Cheers

I think it depends on the type of sticker.

Paper stickers tend to stick well but can be rubbed off over time. Of course this depends on their position and whether you’ll touch them at all.

Heavyweight vinyl stickers stick well but over time the design will wear off. Again, this is based on contact.

Thin vinyl or other plastic type stickers are pretty useless and don’t tend to stick for long. The adhesive never seems very tacky to me.

  5. I remember years ago a friend of mine, who was the Ampeg rep at the time, had some that you could use with an 810. It was a flat piece of metal that hooked under the handle on the back of the cab then it had a hanger on the front.

Not much help as I have no idea where they were from but they do exist.

Edit: This is it. However it looks like basshanger.com no longer exists.

  6. Recently bought a bass with a high mass bridge, the problem is I’m struggling to intonate it and to lower the action.

To get the intonation (almost) right I had to cut down the saddle length screws and springs to get them to come back enough and I get set the action lower as if I loosen the saddle grub screws any further they just come loose.

I’ve been looking for others but it also has a string thru config and they seem quite rare.

Does anyone know if any good ones exist?

Is she going to be expected to play lots of riffs which need to follow the guitars only an octave down and incorporate lots of open string notes in order to be playable?

If not start by getting the 5-string version of her preferred 4-string set and ignore the G string. Tune BEAD and take it from there. IME if you don't need to follow the guitar parts exactly then use a different tuning to the guitars tends to lead to more interesting and inventive bass lines.

I’m actually not sure. The band already exists but as a 2-piece who want to add a bass player. So I think she’ll be able to write her own lines but will also follow the guitar in parts.

I’ll suggest BEAD to her but she almost always plays in drop-D so B F# B E will make more sense to her. Thanks for the suggestion though, I will definitely pass it on.

  8. Mrs. Strange has just been asked to join a new band after a few years of not playing. The new band plays in drop B.

Given that she only has 4-string basses, has anyone tuned B F# B E on a 4-string, and what strings would you recommend?

  9. His hair fell out when he had chemotherapy and then grew back white. He was baffled too as he didn’t have any grey hair before.

Apparently it isn’t uncommon for that to happen.

I think Mark is a better player than he gets credit for. He does a lot of interesting (for the genre, at least) things with chords to fill out the sound of a 1-guitar band. A lot of the time you don’t notice what he’s really doing. I enjoy his playalongs for that reason, you get to see what he actually does.

    Nottingham:

Stereo MCs (posh boys from Ruddington)

Tindersticks (an amalgamation of two far more interesting bands)

Both bands had to move away from Nottingham and all but deny any connection with the place before they became successful.

There's also been a series of one-hit wonders, novelty acts and minor indie bands none of whom are worth a mention.

Nottingham has always been a weird place when it comes to mainstream success as a musician/band. The late 70s/early 80s produced plenty of contenders who should have been massive but managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Anyone remember Medium Medium (signed to Cherry Red), 23 Jewels (had a single of the week in NME), 1,000,000 Fuzz-tone Guitars, The Howdy Boys, None So Blind (their debut single was produced by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics) or Pinski Zoo?

There’s Pitchshifter and Six By Seven.

More recently there’s also Jake Bugg and Sleaford Mods.

Also Bruce Dickinson is from north Notts.

Plus Consumed who were on Fat Wreck Chords in the ‘90s.

Just had a look on Discogs, the white label PiL one is in the wrong sleeve, I have the correct purple sleeve with a different 12" version in. It says £40/£50.

Exactly why I didn't want to just offload it all to a local record shop.

    Thanks @joeystrange.

    🙂👍

    You’re welcome.

As BigRedX says, be careful if you’re selling on there. But if nothing else it’s useful to find a relatively accurate value if you want to sell elsewhere.

  12. I think this would be a no-brainer for Fender too but it seems like they’re more set on continuing to put out almost identical versions of the same basses but with a different prefix/suffix. And signature models.

For years I played Precisions that I had swapped out with Jazz necks and really liked them. Then I got a new P and loved the neck so I left it. Now I struggle to play a Jazz-type neck.

My preference is a wide nut with a shallow neck, as opposed to a fat, chunky neck, but either is fine.

My fender neo 610 sits next to my two Ashdown 210 neos, the 610 has heaps more “depth/ fullness  “ , at same amp settings.

    This.

I also have a Fender Neo 610 that has so much more than the 210, 410 and 212 that I have or have had recently.

If I could find one (and had the cash) I’d have the Fender 810 in a heartbeat.

I wouldn't know tbh, what I do know is I really enjoy a pint of Rockin' Robin and Olde Trip, I don't enjoy Greene King's ales like IPA and Abbotts, they have a funny taste to them TMMV

Kimberley had that same taste when they first took over (which is why a lot of people on Kimberley stopped drinking it) so it sounds like this could be the original recipe.

well that's my theory, it's very similar ( the same IMO) to Olde Trip, made for the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem when it was owned by Kimberly Brewery (Hardy Hansons), more info on this fascinating pub and a photo of the Olde Trip beer pump for bass players not familiar with Nottingham's most famous drinking establishment.

Now when we’re taking ‘Kimberley recipe’ are we talking the original recipe or what Greene King sold as Kimberley when they first took over and changed the recipe, hoping nobody would notice?

Rockin' Rudolf is a very pleasant festive offering from Greene King, I don't normally like their beers but this one is Kimberly Ales recipe (I think) a local Nottingham Brewery they took over (closed down) a few years ago

Didn’t realise this was the Kimberley recipe. Being born and raised there I feel it’s my birthright to drink many pints of this.
