1.
For roundwounds I only use nickel. I've tried various SS but just prefer the sound of nickel for what I do, a touch softer and more organic if you know what I mean. I'd still suggest trying the hotwires or some other 'halfwound'. The only way to find out is to give them a go!
Ok cool thanks im gona get a set of Status Halfwounds and see what they are like thanks for the advice =]
Sounds like you have the sound you like from the string you already use in which case I'd go for either the Elites or Picato if you want to play it safe. If you want to try something different give Status Hotwire half-wounds a go. I really like them, very smooth sounding and a similar to flats but with a bit more zing if you need it. You can get them here - http://www.status-graphite.com/.
Thanks for the suggestion im definitely going to check them out.
I was thinking about going for a set of Elite nickel plated strings I heard they give a smoother sound with a bit of a zang have you had any experience with nickel plated string? or would you still suggest looking at the hotwires?

  3. As some of you may have noticed I have recently bought a Yamaha TRB 5II which I completely fallen in love with but I want to restring it for the sound I normally use and like.

I like a smooth, phat and punchy sound with a little bit of zing when its needed.

Can anyone help suggest what strings would be good for this?

I was thinking about maybe some flatwounds (as I use them on my other basses) but I want to hear what you guys have to say first.

    Thanks.

  4.
Sorry I meant prosteels (still daddario though)

I like them, good bright aggressive tone. Life isn't bad either
I might check them out to be honest im looking for something less aggressive but not as smooth as flat wound strings.

  5. Personally I would go with lessons, I started trying to teach myself but it wasnt gona happen even though I have been playing electric basses for a going on 4 years and i was getting no where with the double bass, then iv started getting lessons and they teach you to adapt your electric bass skills to use on a DB and iv made massive improvements since and the lesson I get aint too bad I pay £16 an hour.

And when you have the basics down (which if you been playing other basses you will find you will pick up DB skills pretty fast) you can then go off on your own more but I would highly recommend lessons to start.

    Is it neck through?

Either way great buy, and the price is a bonus! I'm gassing for a TRB1006J / TRB 6II ! Though am on a bass buying ban and i need a new amp and i'm skint, but just looking won't hurt... :)
Lol i never thought of that you have a good point =P

And no its bolt on (which to be honest I favour) i find i have more stability with bolt ons and its built like a tank lol.

Yeh i was extremely lucky to come across one in perfect condition and at such a good price too, you never know one day you might get one you could get lucky too =P

  7. Mine was a Gigsby P250 P-Bass cheap and cheerful at the kingly sum of £85 and you know what... it was great it played very well. I still have it and I reckon if I changed the pickups in it it would be a half decent bass.

  8. Yeh I know what you mean I love Yamaha basses ... as you may of noticed in my signature =P

Edit - Any suggestions on what strings to put on it? I love Bass Centre Elites they work amazingly on my RBX 374 but any other suggestions?

  9. First of all I would like to say its nice to see you all again since I haven't been on here on quite a while so it will be good to speak to you all again =].

Right next on the list is this sexy beast which i just bought today -

Its a 2001 Yamaha TRB-5 II, Its in perfect condition and i mean perfect there isnt a dink or a scratch on it,
it plays perfectly its barely been used and the past owner cared for it well.

I believe new at the time these were around the £800 mark ... I gave the guy £350 which i thought was the bargain of the century!

    Any thoughts or comments?
