1. What about this bass? http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/stagg-...ess-fusion/9916 its a Stagg BC-300FL Fretless Fusion Bass.

    What does everyone think?

  2.
Do you want a lined or unlined fretless? Someone on here has a MIJ unlined fretless Jazz for sale, which I'd recommend (I have a slightly younger version of what's for sale).
I would prefer unlined since it looks cooler but im happy either way lol.

  3.
A few folk on here (including me) have good things to say about the Squier VM Jazz fretless. A great bass for 250 sheets.....
Yea iv had a look at that I have been tempted by that, is it as good as the fretted VM Jazzes?

  4.
Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your advice!!!! This site is truly amazing!!!! Love it already!!

I'm going to buy new as opposed to second-hand. Would love a Yamaha BB414 but based on my budget I think I will be opting for a Yamaha RBX 170.. possibly in old violin sunburst or red metallic.

I will obviously need a practice amp but again, I'm a newbie to this so any help/ advice on a decent amp would be much appreciated. Just need one to use for practicing the bass in my bedroom so nothing seriously loud.

Would I need any effects pedals?

Looking for a package deal for around £200 to include the RBX 170 but could not find any online. Help please!!!!

Thanks again for your input!!! :)
Had a look round they are not really any packages as such but iv put this together for you that will easily cover what you need to practice on =]

    Bass: Yamaha RBX170 http://www.dv247.com/guitars/yamaha-rbx170...lic-blue--12177

    Amp: Ashdown Tourbus 10 http://www.dv247.com/guitars/ashdown-tourb...er-combo--73694

That's a 10 watt practice amp that will be perfect for you to practice on it might be small but it will still pack a bit of a punch =P.

And no you don't need any effects pedals to start with that can come later when you wana experiment with sounds.

That package I put together there comes to £181 so thats within your £200 budget so you can spend any extras on like a strap and stuff like that.

    Hope you like it =].

  5.
How much do you want to spend?

What kind of music do you want to play?
Its just for a play about at home not really looking for anything serious and im not looking to spend a massive amount.

  6.
Great!!!!!! Thanks for that!!

On a similar note.. if I bought one particular bass guitar, would it be suitable for playing 'big band' swing music as well as playing funk/ soul etc, or would I need to buy another type of guitar for each style of music? What dictates the sound of a bass.... string type, pickup type, guitar body type?

Sorry for the heavy question there.

Any help is very much appreciated!!!

    Thanks again..
If you pick the right bass you can use it for most styles and yes depending on the strings will change the sound of your bass.
Also depending on the amp you use and also if you use any effects that will also change the sound of your bass.

  7. I have never really used effects before in my playing but I wana start experimenting and iv noticed you have a choice between effects boards or pedal board I was just wondering which is better (and cheapest),
the effects board or pedal boards nothing massive or anything.

Also if anyone have any suggestions of particular models to look for mainly would be a massive help.

    Thanks.

  8.
Yeah, I refuse to play the bass parts as they really don't give an accurate representation of playing bass at all!! I usually end up with the drums or the vocals, depending on whatever everyone else DOESN'T want to play :)

I'm still firm in the belief that GH and RB are great games to drag out when socialising though!

I think you need a bigger amp to hide your controller though...maybe you should buy one XD
I have my 150 watt White Horse too the side of that pic I could move it there..but it would get in the way of EVERYTHING plus I would stub my toe on it constantly in the night if I left it there =P
You have just let your guard down and it looks like your trying too say you can sing :) which I think you should record and put it all over Basschat! =P

  9.
Hi Guys,

Thanks for the prompt response !!!

My budget is around £200. A friend of mine said that he could get me a new Washburn bass (don't know model), amp and some kinda pedal (?).. all for £170. Still like the Yamaha series tho.

I saw another nice Yamaha bass.. BB 414. Sounds like a fatter sound than the RBX 170. Probably a lot more pricey tho. Anyone played the BB 414?
    Yamaha BB414

On another note... best way to start learning? DVD, books?

    Thanks again!!!
Yeh I own a BB414 (notice in my sig)
Brand new they cost around £250-£300 but they are discontinued so you can only pick them up second hand.
I bought mine from here for £140 which is a absolute steal!
They are amazing basses pick ups are very hot build quality and finish you would expect from a top end bass.
They will go forever and never fail on you, if you can find one on here or ebay I would highly recommend grabbing it.
Its the kind of bass that you will never get rid of simply coz it will stand up to any future basses you buy.

I would say best way to start learning get some lessons only as many as you need just to get the basics, then you can decide weather to carry on or start to teach yourself.

  10.
Veeeeeeeeery nice! I'm a bit of a sucker for Yamaha and would like to have one eventually, when I'm not a total noob any more XD

I see your GH controller there, hiding behind your amp :)
Lol thanks =] yea I swear by Yamaha I just wish they did a proper P-bass and they would be perfect lol. =P
Yea that small amp is my old one I don't use any more its use is for hiding the GH controller behind it =P

I don't actually play GH any more I find it so boring and i get cheesed off with it coz the bass parts on the songs are just to easy and really shoots down bass I feel.

  11. For example a Squier Vintage Modified Precision http://www.drumshack.co.uk/product.asp?coo...s&P_ID=4710
Depending on your budget, but you cant deny that's a beautiful looking thing =]

  12.
Worth a look!

    Yamaha RBX A2 £200:
    http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=80382

Vintage Modified Precision Bass with mods £175:
    http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=105298

    Yamaha RBX 170 £80:
    http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=103190

    Jim Deacon P/J £65:
    http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=105781

Like I say, scope out the marketplace :)
Iv I had the money I would bite bass guardian's hand off for that RBX A2!
That's a steal at that price considering they are about £450

  13. This should do the job nicely
    http://www.basscentre.com/4-string-bass-gu...ision-bass.html

That's the cheapest iv ever found a VM P-Bass as normally they are £250+

    So that's quite a steal.

Plus they are quite upgradeable if you fancy changing something in the future.

  14.
Hi all,

Would really appreciate some help/ advice re buying a bass guitar for a beginner.

I've long been a fan of funk, soul for some time now. Recently been attending BIG-BAND gigs of which my sis has been the singer for some of them.

I'm a big fan of Level 42, Jamiroqui, etc. Listening to them has always given me an itch to learn funk / jazz music. Been wanting to try bass for ages but thought it would be too much like hard work!!!

Now I'm confused by all the technology re what to buy as a first 4-string bass. Do I choose one with active or passive pickups, what strings would I use, what amp should I buy to start with. Could I use a particular bass for learning basic stuff... but also use the same bass to learn swing-jazz and slap bass??

I have been 'googling' and 'youtubing' for some inspiration. Found what I thought was a nice bass.. Yamaha RBX 170. Well within my budget too. Sounds really nice!!! I've heard that Yamaha basses are really good for beginners, however, I've also heard that Washburn basses are good too.

I'm lost now!!! I have the funds but I don't know how to proceed. Buy the Yamaha RBX 170 or opt for a Washburn? If Washburn.. what model?? Or what??

Can you guys pleeeeez give me some ideas, reviews, opinions, how you started off?

    Many thanks for any help!!
Im always in the Yamaha Camp, even though I didn't learn on the RBX 170 I have played one and they are very very very good for the price range you wont get much better, and then once you feel like you can move up in basses Yamaha do great follow ups like the RBX270 and then the RBX374/375 (375 being the 5 string version) and then they go even further.

They have a very high standard of build quality and just never ever go wrong.

Iv played a few different basses and different makes but I keep going back to my Yamaha's =]

When it comes to strings it all depends on what kinda sound your looking for? There are quite a few different string types.
Depending on what sound you want will depend on what strings to buy.

I hope this has helped a little bit =]

  15.
CC Music in the West end of Glasgow do the Jim Deacon models but I have never played one so I can`t comment on them. Here`s a link.
