ah, you had a hand in it too? Certainly would consider dropping off a bass with him for a set up next time I head down the M4.
Yeah he built it with my help. That's what I do in real life ... He really does have a magic touch, IMHO.
We played a Weddding the week before last, had a request to do 3 song choices from the happy couple who were fairly hammered by the time we started. Bride's name was Cherie so you can guess the first choice, also Wildwood by Paul Weller which we did as a bossa ( anything we get bored by we just do as a bossa!). Final host's choice was My Destiny by Lionel Richie so we enjoy Weddings on the whole as we get asked to do some material that we would not normally do. As people said before, we always have a bar and food rider which compensates for the fact that no-one really listens to the first set.... Funniest thing was a middle-aged couple were listening and dancing to the first set: the guy asked us for a request: "Miss Dynamite" which seemed a bit bizarre.
Probably wanted the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain version

Cardiff / M4 / S Wales Bass Bash venues? Any ideas?
OldGit replied to OldGit's topic in General Discussion
im in ! Venues hmm , allways a tough one and all depends on numbers re revenue + fear of 50 Hz rumble in adjacent function suites ILl chat to a few conference and hospitality buds and see if i can offer up a solution Bout time something cropped up round these here parts Sadly my house too small but i know some very good pubs ! Be glad to offer assistance also Gary v8
Cheers Gary.. Need all the help we can get :~) Don't sign up quite yet chaps Once we have a date and venue sorted we'll do a proper post .. -
Myself and Drewie are looking to put a South Wales bass bash together in the autumn. We were talking to a very nice and well postioned venue for this but they have a daytime noise limit just imposed so it's a no go. Can any one suggest an alternative in the Cardiff / M4 area? Thanks OG

There's a loooooong thread on the joys and ploys of playing weddings .. Wedding gigs thread Lot s of stuff there. Weddings can be great but it pays to invest a lot of time in the pre-gig management of the bride, groom and future mother inlaws' expectations. The things we all know from playing loads for years are things they never think of (like leaving loads of time for everything so the band can start on time ) 'cos they have generally only organised a few weddings in their lives .. Us experienced wedding bands are the experts and that should be a selling point of your band ....
No, even if just a normal jazz, it won't hold it's value well at all.
Actually the value will remain constant - ie top value - but the recognition of that value in a montary way will not. Daft but true. Oh a JJB P bass will hold it's value as it's recognised and in demand.
Read this before the pic appeared... was a bit worried for a second! Have to say I'm still P-curious, even after 2 failed attempts. Don't think I gave either bass a fair crack of the whip. Maybe someday soon I can try again. Nice wee collection OG!
Not a collector by nature so I aim to end up with just the ones I play.... honest!
Some really nice basses here, especially your Shuker P5 which I've admired before, but I've tried and tried and can't get on with the Precision sound. I've had three and thrown in the towel. Maybe the last ditch attempt will be either a Shuker or the new Fender P5. Who knows?
Ha ha yeah I get like that with Jazzes .. Funny that we feel we should get on with them all isn't it
Just a quick one. http://robotrobotrobot.net has just been selected as my web hosts "Customer site of the Week!". They are displaying my Stormtrooper design with the following text: "This customer web site uses comic strip like images, which really suits the content and purpose of this web site. Nice!" This is a good example of inbound links and hopefully a helping in hand in going viral. I had to submit the site to the host for inclusion in the "customer sites" section...but it seems to have paid off already. The moral? Take any opportunity to promote your band site. I might not make any sales from that link as I have no control over the demographic that see it, but it is going to help my page rank!
Nice one Paul...
Hi, im new to this site and still trying to figure it out! i might be interested in your japanese P basses, can you tell me the years they were made? Thanks!
Sure .. The 57 re-issue if for sale. I'm keeping the '62 (for now anyway ... who knows ) Serial number on the neck suggests 84-88 according to the Guitar Dater Project but the neck end date in pencil is 89. PM me for more info. images etc. Cheers OG

Tinman's in Lincs if you want to see a Shuker in the wood. It's not a jazz but you'll see how well he makes them. +1 on you get what you ask for so be careful and do more thinking and trying things before you order. re holding their price, wella Fender will always be easier to sell as people know what they are getting. A super jazz will be easier to sell than a full on personalised custom but you have to find the right person. It's best to order thinking you'll never sell it. BTW spend the extra and get the side LED's. Worth every penny of the uplift. Impresses the punters and guitarists too
if I could afford what you would need/want for it mate id probably have a punt... but I am skint after the last 2 GAS attacks! Is a pretty looking thing. Is it heavy? That '75 ive been tinkling on every now and then is pretty light IMO (but I am used to Ricks and my Gibbo which weighs a ton)
Oh yeah it's light compared to a Gibson. Just 4.3 kilos / 9.4 lbs on the bathroom scales .. It's on the heavy side for a P bass..
from my experience, they do not update things on their website very well. Last time i enquired about something, it had sold quite a while ago.
Yeah basically you have to catch it just right. But if you do they put it on hold for you for a few days so you can decide.
Don't go giving people ideas that the Joe '500 amps of doom' Garcia route is the way to go. It's just cursing the poor guy to everlasting GAS. Just swing by the House of Bass to see the consequence of this. After a sale of a cab, it took roughly 4 hours for 4 valve pre/power amps to appear in its place. Anyway dude, PM.
Thanks, Mr Foxen.

I've bought a few things from Ishibashi. As has been said their customer service is excellent. The best way for me is to get up early and check the ubox at about 6am. If there's something you want email immediately. If you want a direct email and name then PM me
Hi OG umm i did have a wander through the wiki. Joe Garcia.... I dont think I know him, at least Ive seen him on here sometimes but havent spoken to him. Where in Stokes croft? I gues the problem is that this is all still really new for me. Knowing me id probably buy a barrel of monkeys and still it sounded OK! err just kidding, but you get the picture. Cheers Matt
Dunno He lives around there somewhere with Mr.Foxen (in a musicians' shared house styleee I believe ) PM him and find out
cool web site - there's a really interesting article on there as to why he believes the concept of the Buzz Feinten tuning system is flawed. MTD owners take note
Thanks, we worked very hard on it and it's working well for him. Many vistors reading his articles from all over the world. He has a lot to give in terms of the science of fettling guitars and basses and really knows what he is doing. Certainly the best fettler I've ever had work on my basses.
C'mon - no one else find that funny? Well nuts to the lot of you
I did
I know what you mean and it is a different world now so consequently, we have different expectations. But I also think there's a real tendency to get too hooked into the idea of everything having to be 'perfect' before we can make music and in my experience (both as a musician and a manager) it was far too easy to blame the gear rather than look at whether the attitude and performance is right...
Sure and to a certain extent "toughing it out" is part of a successful band's arsenal. You have to be able to cope with the hassles and problems and still do a good show. However that is an advanced skill. I well remember gigs on sax with very poor monitoring where I just stuck in ear plugs and just got on with it looking forward to the end. Every band should rehearse this stuff a bit. No monitors is a key one.

I guess you may have been through the Wiki bit on buying your first amp? http://wiki.basschat.co.uk/info:buying:cho..._your_first_amp JoeGarcia seems to own about 200 bass rigs.. Maybe a trip to Stokes croft for a bit of hands on consultancy?
Ah well... you pays yer money (or not in this case) I guess. FWIW, I enjoyed it. And I know who won the amp too... spawny bastid. EDIT. And I now have slight GAS for an Urge.
Cheeky! Yeah I felt the urge for an Urge once he'd gone through what it could do. And it's a P bass, of course
They were giving away a Hartke combo in a little competition at the end.............I didn't win.
I did Sound was crap though. I had to resort to ear plugs to make it bearable. I wasn't stunned by his playing but I was very much entertained by his tales.
Absolutely. I think there is nothing wrong with the band undertaking some self-promotion; i think there would be something fundamentally wrong if they did nowt to publicise a gig. BUT - as Cheddatom rightly points out, to be a successful promoter, you have to work hard at it. We list in the local media, the web, we poster everywhere we're allowed and (SHH!) hand out flyers too. Some of the best band nights in Manc run solely off reputation. The gigs don't need to be advertised as they are always brilliant, and unsurprisingly they have lists of bands wanting to play as long as your arm. Our night has only been running since June but it's going from strength to strength. Promoters are supposed to promote, end of - that's their job. We have some right characters on the scene; one such person ran a busy night at a well-known CC venue. A band asked to be given their share of the ticket money they'd earned (about £80); the guy said "here's a tenner, now f*** off" and got the doormen to eject them from the premises.
Been round this one a few times eh Tom? So look at that list there from Rasher. That's what a promoter is supposed to do, by any normal criterion. However only the good promoters do that. Bad promotors do nowt much. Now imagine if the band actually did all that lot as well..... Plus all the mailing lists, Myspace promo, actually telling mates about the gig, dragging along new people, doing promotions for groups like a free ticket for the organise who brings 10 people along etc. etc. For "good promoter" gigs you'd then have twice as much promotion going on. For "bad promoter" gigs you'd have 100% of what a good promoter should do plus your stuff. Who cares most about your band being successful;? If that's not you and your band mates then you are not going to succeed. Simples... and I'll repeat: get a copy of Gig-Getter, The Manual. It's getting out of date and says nowt about online promotion and myspace type communications but the offline stuff is relevant and works. Stuff like:make a personal contact with the promoter, get an appointment and be prepared to go a few times as he may well have something more important to do and bow you out. Don't bullsh1t about the hundreds of people you can take if that's not true. You will be branded a BS merchant and they do talk to each other so that will be you stuffed. Take a promo pack with pictures, info, contact info, a demo CD or DVD labled well with your info (on the disc as well). yes you may well have a mysoace but the effort of going to look at it may be too much. And yo cant play a myspace in the car. Respect what they do and the challenges they face. Don't expect to get a plumb Friday night gig if you have no following because, as Rasher says, you're only going to get a few chances for love, then the money bit comes into play. Do your bit, don't expect the promoter to do it all for you.
It's strange how people complain about not having gigs and then don't show up.
... and how they complain about the promotor but do nothing themselves ..

It is August ............ Do you have a copy of gig-getter? Some good techniques in there to get into venues for the first time, which is what I assume you are doing. http://www.gig-getter.co.uk/
