2.
I think if you broke this down into genres, you'd probably find the funk, R&B and metal guys tended to have more 5s or higher than the punk guys, with rock and jazz guys not really following any kind of pattern.
.... and us Ceilidh guys? I'm with The Funk .. 5 for my normal band but 4 in tricky situations like jams
  3.
Just like my awesome SX
It's still not gone pink though Don't tell me you are finally seeing the sunburst light?
  4.
I'm sort of looking for how to describe the profile of the neck of my Johnson bass, so some sort of guidance there would be good, I'm sure 'slim profile' doesn't cover it.
Here's a good example from Ibanez a : Width at Nut b : Width at 12th Fret c: Thickness at 1st d : Thickness at 12th Also some idea of the curvature of the back of the neck - baseball bat, slim and flat, C shaped, V shaped, etc..
  5. Did you do the poll? I don't see it .. Oh and you'd better have tick boxes for "other" and "both"
  6.
That'd be an added bonus for me. I've never been good at holding a plectrum, have contemplated glue but that might be awkward when I go for a smoke.
or a wizz .... Yeah but then you revert to finger style and have sticky goo on your plucking fingers .....
  7. If you use the gaffatape strip method don't the plectrums* get all sticky? * Plectrums or plectra, either is correct.
  8. I've had this jazz bass bridge PUP in my bits box since I got it to use in a P-J config in about 1990 .. It was rewound then but it was not new so Can anyone id it for me? Is it a Fender one and any idea what age - do the numbers mean anything? Ta OG
  9.
I really like the profile of the neck on my Johnson bass, its a lot like a bat, thick and round, I was told its like the old tele bass necks, but I've never had hold of one. Gonna be looking for a new neck similarly chunky but with a little more quality, better fretting and finish etc. Any suggestions?
There's one on my Valenti - for sale
  10. My 62 pick guard is in my avatar .. See, even wise old gits do dumb things now and then, oh and well before I was old and wise
  11. Ta Hummmm, Elixirs, still for me then. I like the "wet" feel they have
  12.
I'll do some shovel weilding for some CD making.
Give Dan a ring then
  13.
I hope so..... but Fender are on a mission with John's Guitars, they tend to contact Ebay when they're up for auction !
Looking at some of the others on the Bravewood site I can see why ...

  15.
Right, strings are on and so far so good. Not had an enormous amount of playing time yet, but I'm pretty impressed. They're not quite as bright as I thought they would be, but they are very thick and punchy, quite aggressive sounding. The coating doesn't feel weird at all, in fact they feel like regular strings. String tension, I'd say is a little softer than average, bit like DR Sunbeams, but they feel nice. I'm afraid I can't comment on the longevity yet, obviously, but I will in due course. Can't really comment on how they compare to other coated strings either, as I've never tried any others, but I have heard that some brands can feel a bit slippery, the Nexus strings feel pretty much normal as I mentioned before which was a nice surprise. Got a practice on Wednesday and a gig on Friday, so I'll spill a bit more once I've had more proper playing time with them. Oh one negative point, they have multicoloured silks on them, a different colour each string which kinda spoils the black evil look I was hoping for... Cheers, Eude
How are they doing?
  16. Gone from Ebay .. So did a BC'r get it?
  17.
+1 I had 1 year playing with a country band, which I did for money, and also some years ago playing waltzes and quicksteps when Id rather have been doing Yes and Deep purple. In both cases I improved as a player more than I would have done playing what I wanted to do. Also, if you dont look as if you are enjoying yourself, sure as hell the audience wont.
During Stand by your Man I try to work out why Lyle Lovett covered it ... What with Lyle being a guy, and all ...
  18.
I like the strap pick-holder idea though.
Here's a few shots. I'm trying to remember which BC person came up with the idea of taking clips off cheap tape measures for this. I'm eternally grateful to them anyway ...
  19.
(it's an age thing) ;-)
Ta Thanks for pointing that out ... Now, why did I come upstairs?
  20.
If you hate a song, you won't give it your all, end up resenting playing it and audiences notice that.
.. but only every do that in rehearsal. If you loose the argument about a tune and it gets into the set list then play it as if you love it. Every time. There's always something in every tune that you can work on to help you improve yourself as a player. And once you've learned to fake sincerity you have it made as a covers artists ....
  21.
Have a bump on me... (and it's No. 5) ;-) Shaun
Aarf So it is! How did that happen?
  22.
Unless I've missed it somewhere the other thing you need to think about is a sound man. Having even a half decent out front set of ears can make a huge difference to what the punters actually hear out front. ///snip// People like these are gold dust so if you do find a friendly pro then it'll be a real bonus
Gold dust indeed. That is such a luxury. In the absence of such a great opportunity you need someone with ears who can tell you what to do to make sure everything is audible and balanced. Then you need a band full of people who trust that person and not sneak a few clicks up on their level... I do this for our band and I can tell you that EVERY time I tell the drummer his snare is too loud and to put the halo thing on it that tames it a bit he grunts and grimaces at me.... and we're like brothers and have been playing together for more than 20 years .... Getting compliance from bull headed people would be very hard. So an outsider, especially one with loads of street cred like molan's man, would be a huge benefit.. Re tunes no one knows ... I think you can play them and get a good reaction as long as they are accessible and work fine the first time people hear them. Things with obscure words and no melody will be hard to get over but you just have to work the showmanship up a notch. Once your crowd has seen you do it a few times the problem tends to be less. We used to do a big band jive number in a soul band I was in. No one knew it at all but more than once I was told by a punter that it was in The Blues Brothers .. It wasn't but they just thought they knew it.. The question you have to ask yourself is "is this the best tune we could be playing n this slot" and if you love it and it makes you feel happy and you can infect your audience with some of that then stick with it. Tumbleweed after a tune? You shouldn't have that problem. Just fix it by not leaving any gaps .... easily dealt with ...

  24.
It's astonishing to hear a big horn section play that solo note-for-note, complete with all the little twists and turns. One of the very many things I love about Zappa is that his pastiches were always sympathetic. Cruising With Reuben and the Jets really takes the piss, but you can tell how much he loved the music he was parodying. He was never one to bother about genres :-)
Yep that version of Stairway was playing on the radio one afternoon when I switched it on in about 1992 or so. I was gobsmacked - what was this amazing horn thing with a huge smile plastered all over it? I was truly amazed to hear it was Zappa. I had very little idea about FZ before that other than he was "weird"..
  25.
MB1. Check out "Zoot Allures" off the "Best band you've never heard!" cd to see just how bad this guy claims to be!
One of my favourite CDs of all time .. Love that version of Stairway to Heaven I think I've given about 5 copies of it to Zappa non-believers down the years a gentle introduction to the man, the music, the moustache ...
