Does anyone know where this bass ended up?

I heard (the journalist and event promotor) Jon Savage say in the early 80's that he had all the Pistols gear in storage after they split. Not sure if that included all the guitars.

2. Bit of a Sunday morning Jack a Nory from me ...
Back in the late 70's I started out playing bass and always looked up to Fenders being the holy grail of basses, I could never afford one(even second-hand) having just started out on my working life as an apprentice on £20 a week. Once I'd managed to save up some money I had to settle for an Ibanez Blazer that I bought brand new from Macari's in London to replace my 4Kay short scale :) that was my substitute for a Fender P at the time.
I then moved onto a customised Wal pro1 a lot of the bass players I liked were using Wals at that time (I had the idea then that Fenders were just too one dimensional).
Next up I wanted an MM Ray real bad and went to the bass centre in Wapping with all my hard earned and my Wal as part exchange, couldn't believe they had no Rays in stock when I got there and heartbroken I started trying out other bass's in the shop and fell straight away (or as soon as I plugged it in) for a brand new (89) Warwick Streamer. I used that as my only bass for near on 20 years and funny enough on selling it (it was a great bass I just got tired of the tone) I went full circle and picked up a passive Fender J.
I now have a couple of Fender P's, the latest one I only picked up last week is a 77/78 model, as well as sounding great and totally different to my 2000's model it also makes me feel real happy that I finally got hold of the bass I had been lusting after all those years ago.
Looking back now if Money had been no issue (which it was) I'd of liked to of kept the Wal.
P Bass's do it for me now and when they don't there is always the Jazz :)

3. Thanks for your replies guys.
I took it to my luthier today to get it set-up and he said the same as you guys, that it's just a crack in the varnish and told me not to worry about it.
I had the pickups, pots, and neck-heal dated on the bass while I was there and they all come back as stock 77/78 parts so I'm happy about that with it being an S8 serial.

Ok, I finally did it :) managed to lay my hands on a late 70's P from this very forum (pic is not great as had to use flash as we had no sun here today :))

Not had a chance to try it in a band setting yet but it really seems to have a kind of deeper but brighter creamier sound to it than my newer P.
Hopefully get it set up properly for me in the next week or two and should be my new go to bass.

Just had my luthier strip this one down and set it back up for me. Thought I'd post what he found on this S8 serial
Pickups are 77, Neck has a 78 stamp on the heal, Pots are 77, and the scratch plate sticker is the same same serial number as on the headstock. So she seems to be all origional :) and the latest date puts her at a 78.

5. Thanks for the info Lozz.
Now I just have to hope I get used to the weight of it, everytime I pick it up I'm like OMG it's a tank! 4.9 kg on my scales, not sure how that ranks with regards to weight on these old machines?

You should! Inspired by this thread, I took my old Precision to a rehearsal last night for the first time in ages. I usually take the Stingray or Shuker. To be honest, I'd forgotten just how good a passive P sounds in the mix. I was smiling all the way home :)

7. Hi.
I just picked up a 70's P-bass and wondered if any of you guys have any experience or could shed any light on weather or not I should be worried about what seems to be a hairline crack in the varnish near the headstock. I have attached a link to a picture of it. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/5/hairlinecrack.jpg/
The previous owner has confirmed the crack has been there a while and is only cosmetic.

8. Loads of great bass sounds and artists in here I'd never checked out , thanks for that.
I guess I'll have to echo my thoughts on this choice.... a P-bass with flats, tho he plays it well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzyj3Wxhjr4

9. Interesting topic and something I'm trying to work out myself.
I have seen Wobble live a fair number of times and he's normally been galloping with both fingers :)
and.. I recently started having bass lessons (after 30 odd years of playing) and my Teacher picked me up straight away on my only using one finger most of the time to play, I hadn't even realised it myself till he pointed it out!
I think on my part it was/is lazyness and have now made myself aware of this and tried to go back to using a 2 finger technique. With Wobble I don't know why it is, but I do know he's dead tight on his rhythms no matter how many fingers he uses.

10. Ok so I was a bit bored today and maybe spent too much time looking at old videos on youtube.. but
Whilst I always had a crush on Suzi Q in the 70's and loved her leather look :) .. seeing this maybe impromptu bass solo from her back in 2009 makes me feel she never really gave a lot of love to her bass playing.
