Feb 66 Fender Jazz Bass
hiram.k.hackenbacker replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
Just found this. http://fenderbassplayer.com/properly-dating-a-fender-bass
Quote "One exception is that most Fender pots from 1966 to 1969 are dated to 1966. Pickups were only date stamped from 1964 to about 1979 but can be really useful in helping pin down the year." Translation = everything went wonky as soon as CBS got hold of it! -
I'm most definitely not an expert, but don't the body and neck have date stamps ? If so you could have a December neck and a January the following year body. What year would that bass then be ?
Didn't some of the really early ones have a body date written in pencil in the pocket? I don't think I've heard of body date stamps though. -
Beautiful long/short-haired blonde/brunette demanding the darn thing out of the house before he will be allowed near her again, so he desperately sees no other option than a quick handing it in to a shop?
Now that does makes sense!
Maybe you should widen your search to the whole of 66. You could miss out on so many good ones being that specific. Plus the neck might be dated Feb but the bass might well have been put together a month or so later I've had a fair few J's over the years but always ended up moving them on as I just preferred P basses. Have to say though that the 66 J is just brilliant, it has the flattest neck in terms of relief and the lowest buzz free action that I have experienced.
Again, spot on. For the sake of a few months, or a year even (earlier obviously LOL), if I happened across "the one", that's job done. It was just out of curiosity more than anything as I haven't seen one myself. I would love to say I get on with Precisions, but sadly they don't do it for me :-( -

Your'e right of course. The only things that matter is how it plays and sounds. Ultimately, whatever the neck says, the pots won't be anywhere near it :-) -
"Almost excusable"? Have a listen to yourself! Did I miss the memo when you were appointed judge, jury and executioner?
Apologies. Poor choice of word. Understandable would have been better.
Not sure about that. Just been checking my pics, the one I have now has a Sep stamp and one that I sold last year, had a January stamp. Sorry not much help.
Aha! So you've owned a Jan 66 and I've seen a Mar 66. -
So, I have a big birthday looming this month and have been looking around, as I have been for some time, for a month and year correct Fender Jazz. Leaving aside the fact that I could spend my money better elsewhere, has anyone ever seen a 66 Jazz with a Feb neck stamp? I was chatting another BC'er regarding this and he suggested that it's possible that no necks were stamped during that particular month. 66 was a strange old year in the history of Fender, so are there any Fender experts that know for sure?
While I'm here (and without wishing to cause offence) I must confess to being a bit confused as to what exactly the issue is here. My view would be that anybody with an expensive instrument (or even an inexpensive one for that matter) is at liberty to sell it how and where they like. Surely...
Saving around £1k seems fairly attractive to me.
-
But, you still listed it on here which can cost you as little as £7 for a potential sale at your original asking price. Obviously not every bass will sell and I do understand the difficulties around lefties, but at least you tried. I'm not great at math, but if 15% is just over a grand, you could probably figure out what ballpark the asking price is in?
Why does it matter to you?
For essentially the same reason that most complain about eBay.
-
I guess it would suit someone who had no knowledge or interest in the bass. Perhaps it was an inheritance. This method outsources the whole transaction. A bit like selling a piece of art through an auction house.
Almost excusable, but I'm fairly certain that the seller is a player.
-
Perhaps the sellers desire to avoid the hassle of selling it directly outweighs their need to avoid paying commission.
I just don't see it as hassle. There are a lot of people here that could buy their dream bass just from the commission of this sale.
-
Can someone please explain to me why anyone would put up a relatively expensive bass for sale (which would attract a commission in the four figure bracket) without making any effort to advertise it anywhere else (as far I can tell).
-
I bought this from another BC'er sometime last year and have never used it other than to check that it functions correctly, which it does. It really is a super piece of kit, but in reality, it far exceeds my requirements and I just can't see it sitting around unused. It really is in excellent condition with only some very small light marks to indicate that it has ever seen any play time. It is fully flight cased and this is also included in the sale. As soon as I purchased this amplifier I also bought the TC Electronic RC-4 Foot Controller for it from Bass Direct. The RC-4 is also as new, never having been removed from it's box and is also included. The dimensions of the Blacksmith in it's flight case are 54cm (W) x 56cm (D) x 25cm (H). It weighs 23.8kg. All the other specifications can be found here. Due it's weight, we would have to enter into conversation around shipping. I would be happy to drive a reasonable distance to ensure it arrived safe and sound.

I thought I would share this in memory of The Man. We used it as our intro music for gigs last year as a nod to a lot of fantastic material we couldn't cram into the set. Enjoy.
I like this more than any of their other basses. There must be a market for it otherwise they wouldn't have made it. 4K isn't that much money to a lot of people these days, it's all relative. If you live in Manhattan, drive a nice car and have a decent wage, this is an ok price. It's like buying furniture. The divide between people's wealth, and the difference in what people consider to be normal is staggering these days. To me it's too much but I'm not the target audience.
+1 I guess. Having thought about it, I paid slightly more for my Pino. Lovely bass, but it decided me I wasn't a P person. Having seen the Holly top version, I kind of understand how the Monarch P was born now. They must have had a few requests for similar and to have space to upgrade to a preamp gives you options. I knew there was something odd about it. Glad the fret thing was pointed out as something didn't compute for me there.
-
I think it looks pretty nice. Would it look good reliced tho?
LOL. I wish someone would buy one and send it to Sandberg to do their HCA thing on it. The Fodera lot would have a sh*t fit.
-
I just read this in the description.... "Additionally the Monarch-P is built with a control cavity so that if you wanted to add a preamp down the road there is a place to do it." Well, if they had just got on and done that themselves, I would warm to it.
Nice, but it would have to be a really, really exceptional-sounding and brilliant-playing instrument... because for that money I'd rather buy a pre-CBS P. And of course I've been genetically programmed to expect a four-in-line headstock with a P-shaped body. A 2+2 just seems wrong!! Yes, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool stick-in-the-mud who wears large-tena-lady-pants.
Yes, quite. I have a Fodera, but it is what it is and it's not trying to be anything else. It is an exceptionally sounding instrument and plays brilliantly, but it's purpose is not to convert fans of a particularly well known and legendary bass. It does nothing for me at all visually and I doubt how it plays or sounds would change my mind. P.S. I am however thinking of what body parts I can sell to fund the purchase of that bloodwood!
-
I recently received a flyer e-mail from Fodera giving details of their NAMM 2016 basses (more on that later) and within in it were details of the new Monarch P. I have to wonder how popular this is going to be at $4000! http://www.fodera.com/monarch-p/ To my mind it's less than half a standard Monarch. Just a split P and passive. I'm sure it plays well, but I can't help thinking if you're going to get a Fodera, you may as well get an active P/J. This leads me to one of their NAMM collection. I love a Fodera me and this is just obscene.... http://fodera.com/in...mperor-4-elite/
