1.
How about a leftfield choice, "All the Young Dudes"?
Er, that's in the first ten already.
 2.
Here's the set list of the band that Roland Rock used to be in; http://www.rebelrebe...0&%20Tracks.htm And since it came up on google here's the list from a USA based tribute of the same name!; http://www.rebelrebe...om/set-list.php Might give you some idea of what's doable and is accepted by the public in a working band.
Thanks for that. I'll have a look later.
 3.
Unless your singer is actually David Bowie.... Of course if you really want to be eclectic in your choices you need to play at least one Tin Machine track!
Well, funny you should mention that, 'cos here he is back in the day.... http://youtu.be/jp7ZqJg3NWM We WILL be doing Under The God at some point!
 4.
Certainly while you are building up a following, you'll need to play things that the non-Bowie fans will be familiar with. That probably means including stuff like Dancing In The Street. How good are your vocalists? I'd love to have a crack at Under Pressure, but we don't have anyone who can sing the Bowie part.
I refuse to play Dancing In The Street as I'm completely sick of it. I think it's been in the set of just about every band I've been in. Just can't do it anymore. We did Under Pressure at the aforementioned charity gig, so that will make an appearance at some point. We had other vocalists in to assist when we did it, so it may take some re-jigging.
 5.
Hmm...Gail Ann Dorsey lays down some mean bass for Bowie - I hope it goes well for you.
She sure does. Absolutely love her playing. I swapped from playing my Jazz, which I used at the 1st rehearsal, to my Stingray which I used last night and it's going to have to be the Stingray from now on. It's just got that sound!
 6.
I was in a Bowie tribute for a few years before my current band - great fun. The Ziggy album is an entity in itself; there are many people who only go to see the Ziggy stuff. As such, we ended up playing a few gigs where the first set was the Ziggy album in its entirety. This was a huge hit for those particular fans, who knew every word and every note which came next. Other ones which went down really well were Life on Mars, Let's Dance, Modern Love, Heroes etc. Funny that you all knew China Girl - i didn't know it and never warmed to it :-( My personal favourites to play were Hang on to Yourself, Fame and Boys Keep Swinging Good memories, and some great gigs
We learnt China Girl last year for a charity gig which is where we the seeds of all this were born. The studio version is a little antiseptic, but we're playing more along the lines of this version.... http://youtu.be/NEl6BBLwSa0 I think the singer has done the whole of Ziggy before. I'm not saying never, but that could be a little way off yet. Strange you should say Modern Love as I don't think that ever came over very well when Bowie did it live. Love the song though. I wouldn't mind having a crack at Cat People as well.
 7.
There's nothing from Station to Station, Low, Heroes or Lodger - that's quite a big ommission.
Just made a new page on the spreadsheet in our Dropbox showing a chart of the spread of songs. Six of the ten we have are from Diamond Dogs or older. Nothing between Diamond Dogs and Let's Dance (6 albums) and nothing between Let's Dance and The Next Day (8 albums).
Currently springing to mind: Sorrow, Lady Grinning Soul, Teenage Wildlife...
Now there's an interesting trio of songs.
 8.
Nice you're doing one slightly newer track, but there's nothing after Diamond Dogs all the way to Scary Monsters. Some of my fave albums are in there, although I would find it hard to pick tracks as I prefer the lesser known tracks, like I would do Beauty and the Beast rather than "Heroes" but how many people even know that track?
Mmm, I had to be quite strong about getting Stars in there. I wasn't particularly bothered that it was that track, but I wanted something from The Next Day in there as I thought it would be different bearing in mind Bowie himself hasn't toured it.
Moonage Daydream Sound And Vision Ziggy Stardust TVC15 Fashion Golden Years
Moonage Daydream is quite high up the list of to do's, but I love your other choices as well.
The list could be very long, but I'll just put in a vote for 'Space Oddity'.
Yes, the list of stuff we want to do is huge, but I think we need to get a nice balance with this truncated set. Love Space Oddity though.
More songs from Hunky Dory!
That's another issue, even if we did one song from every album we would still have to miss some albums out for the first gig. At least Hunky Dory is represented already.
There's nothing from Station to Station, Low, Heroes or Lodger - that's quite a big ommission.
As above really. The guitarist is working on Station to Station (the song), but that's going to be a work in progress I think. Stay has been mentioned quite early on. Golden Years will almost certainly get done at some stage as will Wild Is The Wind. I'm not sure about the other two though. I almost don't want to do Heroes (the song) as it's just too obvious. Is that wrong? There is some great stuff on Lodger and that will come soon enough. Everything seems to draw us back towards Ziggy. Three songs from that album are already in. Moonage Daydream has been mentioned more than once between us and the drummer is fairly insistent on doing Five Years. What to do!
 9. I've just returned from rehearsal #2 which went just as well as the first. The band came to an agreement that we would like to start playing live as soon as possible, even if it means playing a shorter set for a support slot of some kind. To that end we moved on to discuss set content for such a gig. The songs below are pretty much good to go and we're looking to expand them by another eight in preparation for our first outing. The Bowie catalogue is so huge and packed with such classics we're spolit for choice. We would like to maintain a balance between early and late material. With this in mind, are there any particular songs that a hardcore Bowie fan would expect a tribute band to play and would be disappointed if they weren't? Here's what we have so far: 1. China Girl (this went in because it was one everyone already knew) 2. Let's Dance (as above) 3. The Jean Genie 4. Rebel Rebel 5. Starman 6. Changes 7. Suffragette City 8. Rock & Roll Suicide 9. All The Young Dudes 10. The Stars (Are Out Tonight) Already in for next time are I'm Afraid of Americans and The Man Who Sold The World.
 10.
I don't wear it very often---I'm not really a sweater wearer---but it might get an outing at a gig at somepoint...
Looks good. Thanks for posting.
 11.
Yes the Commercial Album was the one I got in some special edition. Think it was limited judging by current prices. Nice to see a John Oswald (plunderphonics) reference in this thread. Not for everyone. He had to destroy copies of DAB (see: MJ's Bad) because Michael Jackson's people were not too happy. Can't think why: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8xIWLG-F0Ag
That link is great. I'd never heard of Oswald or Plunderphonics before. The mind boggles at how hard it must have been to create back in the day. The end section is almost Vangelis like in its soundscape. I can see why MJ and his people didn't see the funny side, however it is the complete antidote to him. No one can argue that it's too weird either, because it's Michael Jackson we're talking about! Some great comments there.
 12.
My dad is really into The Residents and whilst I don't quite share his passion I do quite like them. Third Reich N Roll, The Commercial Album, and Meet The Residents are all good. Need to look out my Residents jumper, its a good antidote to all the Xmas jumpers doing the rounds!
I totally get that it's not everyone's cup of Darjeeling, but I'm sure there are going to be some little gems tucked away in their back catalogue somewhere. A Residents jumper sounds fantastic. Post a picture of you manage to find it. Thanks for the info.
 13.
Definitely Commercial Album is a great place to start, followed by Duck Stab(Primus once covered Hello Skinny and Constantinople) and Third Reich(great for a spot of 'guess the song'). I love Gingerbread Man too, the full video on YouTube is excellent, as all of theirs are. My highlight has to be this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTJJb1UqjuA
Thanks Steve. I will investigate those albums once I have familiarised myself with TRAR. I might have this all wrong, but I thought no one knew what the band members looked like. I would bet a large amount of money that the man playing the guitar in the link you posted is the same person singing Give It To Someone Else here.... http://youtu.be/0gWofXR46aw Yet his full face is on show, only from the side admittedly.
 14.
If it was down to one album then it would be Third Reich N Roll for me. Worth the price for Sunshine Of Your Love/Hey Jude/Sympathy For The Devils guitar and cheesy synth. Wonderful!!!
Thank you, your Amazon order has been placed. 15.
God in 3 Persons is my fave by a long way, but probably best to preview that one on youtube before buying. Incidentally, if anyone has a CD copy of the instrumental version that they want to sell or are willing to rip for me, I'd be very grateful. I have it on vinyl, but am struggling to find a digital copy.
Two minutes on t'internet confirms your assumption that it is quite rare. I'll let you know if I stumble across a copy.
 16.
The Residents 'George & James' (American Composers Volume One) LP is good if you like your JB and Gershwin done a little differently. Here's a little James..... http://youtu.be/kINq...65ABDD21A242D3C
Great stuff. The track that ignited the spark for me, which was one of those random You Tube recommendations, was "Give It To Someone Else". There are loads of live versions on You Tube, but I couldn't find the album track on there, which is nicely produced.
 17.
Indeed! Long before the days we were all on t'internet i made a cassette copy of this and gave it to a musician friend who was a massive Jim Morrison/Doors fan. He hated it, couldn't see the funny side of it and i still don't think he's ever got over it to this day. Enjoy!!!!
Ah! Now, you see, if Zappa did The Doors, I think this is fairly similar to what it would sound like. Infinitely more listenable than the original as far as I'm concerned. But then I'm weird.
 18.
Don't get me wrong, Eskimo has it's moments ok but let's say it's not the best place to start. The Commercial Album is a good un but seems to be very expensive on Amazon. There are also a few Snakefinger LPs worth checking out too. I look forward to hear what you think about Third Reich N Roll. It makes me chuckle just thinking about that LP!!!
You're not supposed to chuckle. This is music. This is serious business. Having said that....

"Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" (sung in German)[sup][4][/sup]
[sup]How can you not chuckle at that?[/sup]
 19.
I got into them around 1977 after buying Third Reich & Roll. The two earlier albums Meet The Residents and Fingerprince soon followed and then every LP until the mid 90s. Third Reich & Roll is a must for early period Residents but all of those plus Not Available, Duck Stab/Buster & Glen interesting but i do prefer the early stuff best. Those Ralph LPs were difficult to find back then over here but worth the patience to track them down. 1980s Commercial Album is fun and one of the most accessible as is the Nibbles compilation which was released by Virgin in 1979. Other worth having compilations are Residue Of The Residents (1983) and Petting Zoo (2002) and probably best to avoid Eskimo for now. If it was down to one album then it would be Third Reich N Roll for me. Worth the price for Hey Jude/Sympathy For The Devils guitar and cheesy synth. Wonderful!!! I've played a lot of this recently (I still have the vinyl LPs) but it doesn't seem half a whacky as it sounded at the time so i'd be interested to hear what anyone just discovering this stuff thinks about it.
Thank you ever so much for that insight. I did laugh when I read your comment about Eskimo as I had literally just been reading the comments on Amazon about that very album. I almost bought it immediately after having read them! I tend to avoid compilations unless there is material present that is unavailable elsewhere, because if I get into it I'll end up buying it again anyway. Third Reich N Roll it is then. Anyone want to suggest a second purchase
 20.
I ended up buying one album and then stopped for that very reason. It's like just now getting into Frank Zappa or Neil Young. Where the hell to start? I'll be interested in the responses too.
Ha ha. Do you know, I was going to say that it would be similar to someone asking me about Zappa as I have pretty much everything he's done. Go on then, which album did you go for? Did you like it?
 21. I've heard a few bits and pieces of The Residents on You Tube and I was sufficiently curious to take the next step. I then had a look at their discography on Wikipedia and it's huge. Can anyone recommend a good jump off point for a first album purchase? Thanks.
