My beloved 62 Gibson EB3. I've had her for many years & I use her all the time especially for gigging, she's vertually mint despite being 50 years old next year, sounds & plays like silk. [attachment=92458:62 EB3 & Ttrace Elliot - Hartke , Ampeg rigs..JPG] [attachment=92460:DSCF0499.JPG]

I too need clarity & depth as I play in a very loud classic rock band & some of the bass lines are complex & need to cut through the 2 Marshall guitar rigs so the best I've found is an active Jazz. A standard passive Jazz just does not cut through enough neither too will a P. We only mike up the vocals so rely on the back line to give the volume, clarity & tone. I've used many basses for the job from Rick's, Laklands, Warwicks, Musicmans etc but there comes a point where you cant pick out the detail at volume & the only one that clearly does is my 3eq American Jazz Deluxe Custom Shop. This is an early 96 American Deluxe CS Jazz with the Mk1 John Shur active EQ but have changed the 4 pole pickups to the later Noiseless Vintage pickups. Later ones have different 18v eq's, quite diferent but still OK. Mine gives loads of scope for tonal variatin, depth, punch & clarity yet sounding balanced in the mix & can push as far in front as I like if required. I run it through an Ampeg SVT4pro head & various Markbass cabs, usually 2 Mk1 4x10 hlf's. You'll also need to match your rig too for the right tone & clarity as this is equally as importand a choice as it the bass you use. I loved my 73 Jazz, great for less volume playing but it just didn't cut through at volume so try as many as you can before you jump. Rob.

73 Rick with bolt on neck?
Heartbreaker replied to Heartbreaker's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I delicatly contacted the seller & apparently he was told by the private seller 2 years ago when he bought it that 4001's, just like Strat's both had through neck & bolt on veriants but now realises the bullshit. Poor lad. At least he knows where the previous seller is ! I can only wish him the very best of luck in sorting the matter out. -
Check out the EBay add for a 73 black Rick 4001 that looks like a copy as it has a BOLT ON NECK & non Rick Pickups. Item number 290573944163, put on at 21.12 this evening. Also non 73 wavy Mackineheads.

Thanks ALL for your imputs & knowledge regarding these pups. The main reason I moved my 55-94 & 55-02's on sounds like the same resons stated here as the top end was just too hi-fi in the loud live situation despite all the tweeking possible to the eq. It cuts through fine but just too much top. Still kept getting another though as they are great to play & at home sound ok. Just bought another new 44-02 as I'm no longer using 5 stings so will be interested in checking out the new Lak pups to see if they are more agressive & even try a Tonehammer if needs be. My usuall rig is an Ampeg SVT4 pro head with several Mk1 Markbass cabs as we play classic rock at very high volumes, great rig for tones live with my US CS Jazz & EB3 so will be interested to see if I can tame the 44-02. Just on another Lakland personal observation, US versis Skline models. Having had both the 94 & 02's in the deluxe series I can honestly say that the huge extra cost of the US version is not justified with ither build quality, tone or finish, they are all so very similar to justify over double the cost. In fact my last 55-02 was the lightest Lakland I've had at only 8.6 lbs where as the 55-94 was 9.11 lbs, same quilt & finish on both & sounded identical. When you pay big money for a top end instrament you should expect a noticable diferance somewhere. Cheers, Rob.
