I'll get it back and give it a few spins, sounds like there's more to it than I gave it credit for! ped
ooh. fantastic album. and can i add for good measure. . . vinyl vinyl and thrice more VINYL. also i highly recommend the of fungi and foe album for pure weird darkness.
2.
Playing along to Celebrity Mastermind at home the other evening, imagine my dismay when they didn't agree with some of my more "robust" answers. Still, I respect their right to stick to their stoopid correct ones.
good stuff!
3. i wouldn't bother frettin an unfretted neck. but a grand for a neck that cost £50 to make is, well, you know what i'm saying. daylight whatever.
4. oh dear. les is a legend, and is still making highly original and experimental music with a great band of musicians. as for the bass, i agree. carl thompson is also a true legend and builds the finest and most beautiful basses in the world. none of that poly painted j bass rubbish that swamps the market. sad to hear two really great human beings being rubbished like that due to personal tastes. check out carls you tube channel (o'connord).
5.
what about the voice of geddy lee ?
how did it get so high? i wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy? good stuff. bought some silver jews as a christmas present. also good stuff.
6.
I don't understand the aversion to the telephone in the modern world. My girlfriend won't even phone the take-away.
it's not phones, but the people at the other end that are the problem. if you need me i'll be in my cave.
7.
This is a really cool thread! I kinda like the fact that he charges like 3 or 4 grand for a bass and still works in a tiny little workshop like that, gives the impression that he spends most of his money on gear and cool woods for making geet class basses! Also, I've often wondered what it's like playing a bass with an epoxy coated fingerboard? I play a lot of fretless and upright, so I've always been intrigued, but never had the opportunity to try one out. (Only time I ever saw a pentabuzz was in Tokyo, and the guy in the shop wasn't too forthcoming with the tryouts like! But then, who can blame him!) Anyway, just intrigued, really interesting stuff cheers for that Kiwi. Dan
yes. i also wonder where the money goes. the guy could use some new trousers. hard times.
8. sworn to secrecy? trade secrets? shame on you both! i can shave off 3lb of weight in a second, heres how. cut the neck off.
9. strung up. all good. quite happy with how the scroll turned out. wait for a pickup from i.m.p (ibstock magnetic pickups), and it'll be stripped, wired, cleaned up and oiled. will have a bone/cocobolo nut when i get some more bones. i messed the spacing up on this ebony nut. lovely feel, wieghs about 6-7 lbs.
10. quarter sawn mahogany is the neck wood of choice for me. i dont like necks to be too stiff. as long as the wood is stable and has a nice straight grainpattern, you're laughing. mahogany offers great flexibility and adjustability. + when i start messing about with all those laminates, theres more chance i'll lose it. and talking about losing it. . . . i lost a massive peice of rosewood from the back of the scroll, d*&n it! tried to rescue the body but lost heart and had to accept that i'd lost a lot of time and more upsetting, a lot of nice timber. these things happen. anyroad, i managed to scrape some bits together and get a new body in order, double quick time. the neck is not set. be it bolt-on. radius tomorrow, bit more sanding, some holes, bridge and strings. and, if things go the way they have been so far, i'll be showing how to remove a truss rod from your eye. new body-mahogany, ziricote, walnut, sycamore. a bit strange really, still cool though.
11. routed and neck nicely fitted. carved the top. some cocobolo tearout on the side. i'm gonna try and work around it rather than glue on new sides. kind of there with the scroll. i need to work at it.
12. obsesssed with bowie from age 8. one summer my cousin came to stay and brought his strat copy and def leppard hysteria tape. that was it! i knew what i had to do. rocket, yea!
13.
I'd go for the Tokai Pbass......sorry, but any Fender that heavy is (for me) a back/shoulder problem waiting to happen. Unless you can sit down for all your gigs.
100% fenders belong on the front of cars.
14. while we wait for ed's pickups it hought i'd have a go at a ct copy. the scroll bass is something i've been wanting to try for a long time. i'm a massive fan of carl thompson's work. his youtube channel is to die for and i learned a lot from carl thanks to his vids. all construction methods are identical to carl's apart from the heel block, which i wont be using. this bass is open to offers and if you really want a ct feel, i can add a heel block. mahogany core, ziricote top, rosewood back, mahogany neck and macassar ebony fingerboard (a stripey beauty) and cocobolo cat's eyes. this bass will have a custom, handmade, scatterwound i.m.p humbucker and hipshot ultralite tuners.
15.
lead?
fenders are big heavy lumps, about 2" thick. i doubt you'd have problems with dive, i'd be more worried about back injury! never fails to shock me whenever i pick up my friends jbass. i'm actually making a tele'esque bass right now that balances perfectly.
16. i can build you one for that! handmade pups n'all. money back satisfaction guarantee.
17. wow. thats dead cool! constant bridge position, how wierd is that?
18. thats really cool. i love krappyguitars style. they seem to be getting better all the time. looks like a nicely built guitar!

20. all is groovy. side dots, truss rod access cover, and a good setup, and that'll do it. then it's time for ed's custom built imp humbucker-single coil combo, and some decent photos. when you're ready ben.
21. body and neck carved. fingerboard to be radiused, 20" or 16". bridge still to do. i've made the cocobolo and camel bone nut. should be strung up today for a setup, and then were waiting for the pickups from ben.
22. i've been playing for 20 odd years, and music has been the only true constant in my life. now, gigs, f&*^ing hate them. always the same. some nob calling himself a soundman gettin arsey about every little problem, and a room full of nobody. it's always been a total waste of time gigging on school nights, and there's usually one or two 'in bands' that get all the support slots. the rest of the band love playing and i try not to moan about it too much, as it is a free practice after all. but i wouldn't wanna travel very far for rubbish venues with no promotion. i'm the lead singer and guitarist.
23. yea. cherry is going to make a better body than neck. is the timber seasoned? a year air drying for every inch thickness. if you plan on making a neck, make sure you get some nicely quartersawn boards. i can make you a neck for £110 inc tuners fingerboard and frets.
24. profiled and neck attached. body and neck get carved tomorrow, along with tuner holes and a coat of oil. see pics for neck pocket snugness test (look no bolts!), and balance (look no hands).
