@DS287 I was wondering if you found a satisfactory conclusion to this saga in the end? Best, Greg

That definitely doesn’t look right for a new instrument, especially one not listed as B stock. Are you sure the batteries are actually dead? It might be worth trying a fresh pair first, just to rule that out / a wider electrical fault? As for the gouge on the fretboard, that shouldn’t be “normal” on a new bass. If it’s something you can feel easily, I’d say it’s fair to either seek a replacement or at least ask the retailer for a partial refund - especially since it’s a milestone gift. It’s reasonable to expect a new bass it to arrive in new condition. I’d contact Andertons, explain the issues clearly (photos help), and see what they offer. In my experience, they’re usually pretty good about resolving things.

After trials of the MK1, here is an update, with the new MK2. So much better functionality and far snazzier too!

For sale is my lovely Fender American FMT/QMT Deluxe Jazz bass 5 string, complete with original Fender hard case. It has an alder wood body, bound maple neck, rosewood fingerboard with mother-of-pearl inlays. Year – 2002 Colour – Tobacco Sunburst Body Finish – Gloss Body Wood – Alder Neck Finish – Satin Neck Wood – Maple Fretboard – Rosewood Frets – 20 Scale Length – 34″ Weight – 4057g (4.06kg) I purchased second-hand from BassBros in 2022 (Reciept for £1,375). Since owning, I had the back of the neck further de-satined, so it's lovely and fast. I also fitted luminlay glow-in-the-dark side dots (although one is just slightly distorted - see pics) and Glockenklang 3-Band preamp. Original electrics available. Original BassBros listing (and better quality pictures) can be found here: https://bassbros.co.uk/sold-basses/2002-fender-american-deluxe-jazz-bass-qmt/

That sounds like something I could use, as I might make some more of these. Do you have any links to where you get these from? An Amazon search was unhelpful.

My wife says she's not lending me these again though! So I would have to invest in a proper acrilic heater!
-
After a couple of recent gig mishaps with trailing leads changing my compressor settings mid-song, I've made a (prototype) acrylic shield today!

Lovely bass tone, there. Fab stuff

A lot depends on their positioning - they seem less 'closed' if they can be set a little away from a wall. That said, I often don't have the speaker directly in contact with the floor - I often lift up onto a case / wedge.

I own two of the GR AT110 (both 4ohms). Excellent cab, and 'light as a feather'. When I compare to my larger cabs (front ported 210 Mesa Subways), the GR seems much less directional - probably helped by their rear port - this may (or may not) be useful in a pit environments etc. I've used the GR's both as standalone cabs, or stacked - with fretless, fretted 5 string, and upright bass. They handle higher volumes well and the switchable tweeter (3 options) is very useful too. You're most welcome to try if you are passing - I'm based near Winchester, Hampshire.

BEFORE entering into any further dialogue with G4M, I would encourage you to speak with Citizens Advice https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk regarding the potential to engage in a legal dispute with G4M. Ultimately, they sold you a case that designed to protect your instrument, but seemingly has done the opposite. https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/somethings-gone-wrong-with-a-purchase/claim-compensation-if-an-item-or-product-causes-damage/ " If an item causes damage to your property through no fault of your own, you may have a legal right to claim compensation (also known as claiming ‘damages’). Warren purchased a MXR Synth pedal from me - lovely easy transaction and great communication. Thanks!

And now a press release via here: https://guitar.com/news/gear-news/john-hornby-skewes-jhs-shutting-down/
-
I've seen an unofficial notice / rumour that JHS (Dist. for Vintage, Encore et. al) are close to shutting their doors. I hope that this is not the case, as their products are useful conduits for entry-level (+) musicians.
