+1 on that... definitely the subharmonic... I think thats a staple part of his recording tone for Make Yourself & Morning View

I get a very similar sound to Dirk's tone from my Stage II , its a very mid range bass with a huge amount of growl when you dig which Dirk does alot, just watch Live in Chicago to see that! Nothing a little compression isn't going to help amplify either!

I love his tone on that album and in general! big inspiration.

i can get a similar(ish) sound from my corvette but just not as thick. he does use a stage II though, i would kill for one! dream bass
