Grassie Posted Sunday at 10:30 Posted Sunday at 10:30 Hi all, I’m sure there might already be a thread similar to this elsewhere on BC, but would appreciate some input from those with experience…. I have a 2010 US Stingray which has an issue with the output along the G string. It seems to be fairly normal when played open (ie unfretted) but pretty much any fretted note is noticeably quieter, almost to the point of inaudible compared to the other strings. I replaced the pickup with a Nordstrand which unfortunately hasn’t made much difference to the G string. The frets are fine, the neck is fine, I’ve tried different gauge strings, stainless and nickel, also flats. Could this be a preamp issue? It’s the only thing I haven’t looked at. If anyone can help out with advice before I spend money on a new pre, it would be much appreciated. Cheers G Quote
ghostwheel Posted Sunday at 19:51 Posted Sunday at 19:51 Knowing nothing about your setup, I think it might be worth asking. How far is the unfretted G from the top of the PU? According to Music Man, there have to be 6/32” while the PU is set to be parallel to the scratch plate, so there will probably be 2/64” to 3/64” more from the top of the PU to the unfretted E, provided the action is set up in accordance to Music Man FAQ (5/64” from the 12th fret to G and 7/64” to E). If I remember correctly, I read once, that it would be worth to try to set the PU a wee deeper on the treble side if there’s an issue with the G string. On my Stingrays, I set the action slightly lower, but the PU exactly the same as recommended by MM, adjusting a little by ear. Quote
Grassie Posted Sunday at 20:25 Author Posted Sunday at 20:25 I’ve tried adjusting the pickup, currently have the treble side a bit closer than the bass side. Bear in mind it is a Nordstrand and not a stock pickup. The stock one was worse. Quote
tegs07 Posted Sunday at 20:38 Posted Sunday at 20:38 I just adjusted the pole piece heights of the pickup and solved the issue on mine. 1 Quote
mep Posted Sunday at 21:47 Posted Sunday at 21:47 As per tegs07. I did the same with mine years ago and it was sorted. No need for anything else. 1 Quote
