Ashdown RM112T Opinions?

Hello,

 

I've been having a look around for potential lightweight bass cabs to use with my acoustic bass. I haven't decided on amplifier as of yet, but most likely I would be looking at around 500watts.

 

Anyway, I discovered these Ashdown 112T cabs which I think may be a good option. They seem well priced, decent handling power and above all lightweight which has now become a priority.

I would be looking to get 2 cabs so I would have a versatile, compact but capable rig to also use with electric bass if needed. Ashdown has never really been on my bass gear radar, so any user experience / opinions would be great. Is there anything else out there in the same price range as these worth having a look at ? I'm not interested in buying used cabs btw.

The only downside to these - the earlier ones, maybe the current ones are ok - is the tweeters weren’t particularly good, and could sometimes rattle with notes lower than low E. But it’s a cheap easy job to swap them out (I got Ashdown to do mine( and then you have a nice sounding light portable cab for not much money.

They were low cost cabs and average quality at best. I would look at Fender Rumble v3 cabs as a better product and low price

If you can step up further then MarkBass MB58R series are very light and sound great

Thanks for that. I guess that if they knew there was an issue with the old tweeters then the replacements would be in the new cabs!

Thanks. Yes I was having a look at the Markbass cabs. They are a bit out of my current bass gear budget sadly, though will still keep them in mind if I can find the extra ££.  I will certainly take another look at the Fender Rumble gear.

I have a pair of the CTM112's, which seem a very close cousin of the RM cabs, if not identical. I use mine with a 30w valve Little Bastard, so not had chance to really run them at a high wattage. Always used electric bass too, no acoustic sorry.

 

I really like them. They're very lightweight which was a big plus for me. Small form means they fit into a car boot easily and don't take up a ton of space when not being used. 

 

I don't use tweeters so I can't comment on the quality of those. My experience is limited with only using the 30w but I'd quite like to get a smaller, higher-wattage head and put them through their paces. Running the Little Bastard as full bore, the cabs didn't seem to be struggling at all.

Hi, thanks for that, much appreciated. Lightweight is definitely a priority as I have external stairs to manage with gear. My current setup is just too much for me to be constantly trying to lug up and down stairs, with too much risk of injuring my back which I can't afford to do. Any potential future musical scenario I'm likely to involve myself in simply won't require big 2x10 cabs and wall destroying amp! Having said that, a setup capable of doing everything from practice /rehearsal levels up to at least medium size gigs would be good!

Portability was a major factor for me too. I'd imagine you'll be fine with the 112's then.

 

If I get a higher wattage amp any time soon, I'll let you know how they handle it.
