Danuman Posted November 3, 2025 Posted November 3, 2025 (edited) Well, it seems I’ve had some bad luck. We were on holiday for a bit, so today for the first time in about two weeks I went to my study/music room, when I noticed a smell. I thought maybe it was something in the bin, or maybe my son (6) had been up here, but I didn’t find anything. After playing for a bit I decided it was bad enough that I really should find out what was causing the smell. It seems quite a lot of rain got in through the (closed) air vent above the non-opening window in our (fairly new) dormer - probably during storm Benjamin the other week. We’ve only been living in this house for about six months, and the weather apparently hadn’t been too terrible over here, so I never even thought to check. Unfortunately, this means it’s very likely that all of my amplification equipment was stood on a sodden piece of rug for about ten days… Two Vanderkley cabs (mould in the covers), a Genz Benz shuttle in a wet gig bag, an Eden WT550 head in a gator case and a 2008 Deluxe Reverb. The soldering station on the windowsill is standing in a puddle of orange liquid. Fortunately it seems my guitars have been spared. So how bad do you think this is? Obviously, I’ve moved everything to a dry place and I won’t be powering any of it on for a bit, but is there anything else I should (or shouldn’t) be doing? Thanks for reading, all tips are gratefully received! Edited November 6, 2025 by Danuman Changed the title for clarity Quote
Downunderwonder Posted November 4, 2025 Posted November 4, 2025 Mouldy covers need a good wash and dry outdoors in the sun. Soldering station got saturated? That's a bit scary. MDF may suffer but anything else should be ok drying out naturally. Any build guarantee on your new digs? Rain does not blow in a properly constructed house. 1 Quote
tauzero Posted November 4, 2025 Posted November 4, 2025 If you've got an airing cupboard, put the heads in there to help them dry out. Might be worth doing a bit of a strip down to the soldering station to see what's happened in there. 1 Quote

Cheers, all good points. I just looked at it in daylight, and it’s not good. I’m going to have to talk to a roofing specialist. 5 hours ago, tauzero said: If you've got an airing cupboard, put the heads in there to help them dry out. Danuman Posted 1 hour ago Author Posted 1 hour ago Well, the roof is fixed and I’m happy to report that all of my gear seems to have survived. The only thing I lost is the soldering station, which is kind of incredible… I’m really impressed with the Shuttle. (It was positively drenched.) All of the screws and rings on the outside have rusted, yet the inside is completely clean and it hasn’t missed a beat. 1 Quote
BassAdder60 Posted 35 minutes ago Posted 35 minutes ago (edited) Good news although sometimes you find damp has got into components and is slowly corroding yet still appearing to work. It’s the same reason cars that get flood water damage even minor are now written off by insurers as they discovered over time failures of components. Not so sure I would have total faith in the amp if it had been wet but you may be lucky, hope so 👍 Edited 35 minutes ago by BassAdder60 Quote
