String ID?

I changed strings…isn’t the grass always greener? I was so careful…tightened them over a week …but the D snapped. I have no idea what they are. It’s a 4x4 instrument. Can’t decide whether to replace all of them (with another older set) or buy a new D. It seems such a hassle…I have psych myself up to it.

The stoppers at the end of the strings are stamped with the note. Anyone recognize the make?

That red at either end, they look like Spirocore Mittel to me. That's what mine is wearing here.

Yeah. I can't get at all of them but the B string does have a B on It. Oddly enough I'd never noticed that until you mentioned it here.

Usually four string sets are labelled I to IV in Roman numerals, with O for Orchestra or S for solo on the other side of the ball. But I've never had a low B or high C, those might be labelled differently.

The G string Spirocore Mittel seems harsh sounding to me. Is there a recommended replacement….obviously with similar tension and volume?

There's several that others have tried and used with success.

Pirasteo Permanentt, Tomastic Belcanto are some. Both warmer than spiros, permanents are a bit brighter than belcanto 

Mind you, this will have to be a trial and error to see what works for the bass and for you.

It depends on the individual instrument, as sizing is nonstandard. Measure the playing lenght on your instrument and refer to the string maker's specifications.

You can put on a string that's longer than needed, but you can't fit one that's too short...
