Following in my father’s footsteps (RIP Corky Holbrook)

Hello -

Im based in Chicago - though I spend a lot of time in the UK - and have decided to join this forum. I’m newly learning bass, wanting to make sure I learned enough to make my father proud while I could. He passed away on Wednesday, and was a legend bassist. (Corky Holbrook; bassist for Billy Ray Cyrus)

 

With some of my parting words to him on Tuesday, I told him I’d track down his missing bass, his prized possession that was stolen from his studio in 2014. Now I know this is a UK based site, and his studio was in Kentucky (USA) but I’ll put the details of it here, and perhaps someone might know how to track down missing things.

Neck: Fender Jazz Bass neck

Body: Fender Precision Bass body

Electronics/Hardware: Identical to a 1962 Fender model

Finish: Tobacco Sunburst (orange into brown into black at the edges)

Factory-built hybrid of Jazz and Precision components

Vintage tone and look, made specifically for Corky by Fender

Not a “Frankenstein” or modified bass — this was purpose-built by Fender

Last Seen:

Location: Local recording studio (specific name not given)

Circumstance: Believed to have been stolen from its vintage-style case, sometime after being left at the studio

Value: Priceless — custom-built for a musician during his time with Billy Ray Cyrus' band, Sly Dog

Reward: $1,000 reward for safe return

Hi Summer and welcome. I am sorry for your loss. Played Billy Ray songs back in the day and as the bass playing vocalist on Achy Breaky Heart paid a lot of attention to your Dad’s bassline. Hope you get re-united with his bass. Paul McCartney was only recently re-united with his bass that went missing 51 years ago! Hopefully you can get it back a bit quicker than that. Cheers, Des
