Yorkshire Bottom End Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 Swapped to short scale basses because of a chronic wrist problem. Find them much easier to play and less painful even though I still have two full scale ones getting dusty. My Sire U5 is my current go-to, but I fancy that active SR sound that I had with my old 34" scale Stingrays. Can you straight drop an active preamp in there + battery without any extra routing for the battery compartment (something like a John East approach to jazz basses)?Ā Has anyone done it and with what? Also would it be an idea to swap out the pickup at the same time?Ā Ā Quote
ezbass Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 Alternatively, stick it through a Sadowsky SBP2 (other preamps are available) for some 2 band action and still retain the pick-up switching and passive tone control. I realise that this isnāt what youāve asked. 2 Quote
Merton Posted October 30, 2024 Posted October 30, 2024 Would the East MM preamps fit? Ā https://www.east-uk.com/product-category/mm-style/?v=79cba1185463 2 Quote
Yorkshire Bottom End Posted October 30, 2024 Author Posted October 30, 2024 That's what I wondered. I'll drop them a line. Toying with a preamp pedal as well (Radial/Sadowsky/maybe Sansamp) so I've got options. 1 Quote
martthebass Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 Iāve got the shorty Sterling and even though itās passive itās fairly hot and got a distinctly Stingray sound. If anything itās got a bit more top end bite than my Darkray.Ā 2 Quote
Sweenyrod Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 It can be done. The Retrovibe preamp fits, and I chose to lose the 3 way switch knob for separate bass and treble. Now a mini switch. Some wood has to be removed on the cavity to get the battery in flat, but hobby knife will suffice. It's really worth it, š 3 Quote
