I find it easier to hide wrong notes on a five string as well. The low notes are not quite as distinct as higher ones and I can get away with murder! 😂

Thats funny, another local bass player i know in jazz circles always said when lost or haven't a clue stay low and play D. why D I don't know he had something there.

Some perspective . Back in the late 70's thru 80's I played in 'function bands' doing old school disco, funk, pop on a P bass and Stingray.  Not a single bod from either the audience or music fraternity questioned my playing, my tone, sound or anything....on the contrary, my phone never stopped ringing.  So yes this ole dinosaur says if you cant do it on a four string?...well there you go.

Another hack, told to me by a Jazz db player, if it's a walking bass line and you don't know the changes, just play a different note every time. You'll either hit the right note, a harmony or a passing note.  Turn the bass up the volume down. . . . and it works.

I'm happy to play a 4, but I just prefer 5's. I'm just so used to having and using that B string. I often say that for me, playing a 4 string is like a 4 string player being given a 3 string bass to play! 😅
