Is Jeff berlin a brilliant salesman, or is the cort rithimic a great bass?

Jeff Berlin is a fantastic musician and player, but I thought the tone in the earlier video was terrible. All fart and no substance.

 

I have a cheap Cort Jazz which looks good, plays well and only weighs 7lbs. Unfortunately it sounds very average. You can tell where the savings were made. Now I'm running it through a Sadowsky Preamp pedal it's sounding much better.
