The Firm

Bought a new hifi for the lounge this weekend. Nad c315bee and c515bee with Monitor Audio B1 Bronze speakers. What a sound! I put on The Firm - Paul Rodgers Jimmy Page project - and fell in love with it all over again! Great open/airy/clear/musical recording featuring Paul's melodic vocals and Jimmy's fantastic electric/acoustic 6 and 12 string guitar playing. Bass comes via the sublime Tony Franklin ably supported by ex Uriah Heep drummer Chris Slade. What a great album it is, featuring an previously unreleased Led Zepp track and music by The Firm.

The reason for this thread is Tony Franklin!! His fretless playing is superb and tonally supreme. I had actually forgotten about Tony and the caliber of player he is so...I think this should now turn into an appreciation thread for his most obvious talent!

..I've read in interviews that Chris Squire's project `XYZ'* which featured Jimmy Page (and also Robert Plant at one point) formed the basis of some of the Firm's tunes! After XYZ, Chris was introduced to Trevor Rabin, the rest is history!

* XYZ = Ex Yes Zeppelin

I had contact with Tony some years ago, we (the Yahoo JD group) were trying to track down a black Roadie fretless that he'd had nicked. Really nice bloke.

yeah is quite nice to hear a bit of fretless in a 'rock' band situation - that Blue Murder album is quite good ... but a song titled 'Sex Child'?.... haha..ouch!! couple of his solo tracks on his myspace are pretty good too
Chris Slade has played with loads of artists, sometimes he's done tours for some bands without necessarily appearing on the original albums. He's toured with ACDC, Dave Gilmour & Asia as well as those already mentioned.
Indeed...

...He also spent many years with Manfred Mann's Earth Band...but they're rubbish, so we won't count them. :)
