1968 Kustom K200B head - SOLD

Recommended Posts

1968 Kustom K200B head - SOLD
Serial No: 32052
(Kustom serial numbers for the K200B - 25287 to 32199 for date range Jul-Dec 1968)

The story goes like this...
I bought this from a guy in the USA some months ago & had it shipped over to the UK.
The head was then taken to top amp man Steve Rowse for conversion to UK voltage (which required a new power supply, etc) & a full service.
Unfortunately it then became apparent that the amp was a long way from being in the 'perfect working order' the seller had described.
Ahhhhhh - eBay - don't you just love it? It had cost me about £200 + duty so I just couldn't be bothered with the hassle of sending it back to Alabama & got Steve Rowse to set about restoring/repairing it...
He spent a great deal of time & effort restoring the preamp back to working order - but the power amp section is beyond fixing further (it does work - but the output is very low/quiet). The next step in bringing it back to life is to replace the power amp section - which is were I've decided to stop with this project.

So this super cool iconic vintage amp is for sale as a restoration project only. The conversion to UK voltage has already been done for you - as has the restoration of the pre-amp. I will supply some schematics as well.

These are the original eBay pics - & the head is in very good cosmetic condition considering that it's 40 years old (has a small fag burn on top & is missing 4 feet from the bottom I think)

Make me an offer!!! Anything & everything considered!!

Having the voltage conversion to UK mains done properly by Steve Rowse (brand new power supply, transformer, etc) + expert restoration work on the pre-amp cost me £150. So that's all I'm after for the amp - £150 (or that approximate value against a trade/px).
I think that's very fair. As you'd then be getting the amp itself for FREE!

Collection preferred (I'm very close to M40 J10).

Cheers
this does look quite pimp, is it SS?
Yes - these were some of the very first SS bass amps. As used by James Jamerson, Bootsy Collins, The Meters & many others back in the late 60's & early 70's. More info & original catalogues (very cool!) can be found here.
And there is nothing more 70's pimp than a Kustom!
jut put a price on it and stop toying with our fragile emotions! ;)
I'd be hoping to get around £200 - which means I'd obviously be losing a fair bit of money (not even factoring in the time & effort that's been 'spent').

Like I said - somebody make me a sensible offer - as I'd really like to see someone finish the project, or else it will languish forever in my loft (a terrible waste!).

Thanks.
This looks absolutely fantastic, but what does it actually sound like??
Fellow BC'er 'paul, the' has a vintage Kustom combo...
He might be able to offer more insight on the sound...he's posted samples here
I bought it because of the Jamerson/Bootsy/Meters connection - & let's be honest, because it looks so amazingly cool!
Done ;) - Right, this is done as cheaply as possible, but I'm pleased with the results. It may distort at higher volumes.

All files were recorded with my passive Precision Special strung with (roundwound) DR Lo-Riders. The Motown with foam by the bridge. No effects were used, I've just mic'd up the relevant speaker with the EQ on full bass, full middle, half treble.
This track was recorded through the stock 15 driver, with foam by the bridge on the bass, Precision pup at 100%, and Jazz bridge pup at %80:

These are a couple of tracks with me just noodling around Dmix' - Precision pup at %80 and the jazz bridge pup at %100:

Files have been compressed for quick upload so I can watch Natural World. Animals give me my funky powers.

Best of luck with the sale, Jim!

Played through one of these a while ago on a support gig at the Fleece in Bristol.
Remembering it having a lovely tone with my P-Bass.

Great looking & sounding amps
