My new Fender Performer

After major, major GAS I finally got myself a Fender Performer last week.

I don't think that I've played enough basses to properly compare it to others but the sound is quite reminiscent of a Jazz at times. There's great flexibility between the two single-wound pickups, soloing the bridge and dialling in the bass gives a wonderful 70s style honk. It's far more subtle than its styling might suggest.

And the neck, oh the neck! What a dream this is. The skinniest neck I've ever seen which almost seems to play itself. I'm using 0.40 - 1.00 strings but I'm almost tempted to go 0.35 - 0.90 as there is not much leeway between the G & E and the neck edge.

The guy I bought it off in the States is a Performer nut. He has 4 in his collection (all immaculate) and this rather battered one. It has clearly been dropped on its rear end at some point and there is a fair amount of damage, fortunately cosmetic. It may not be in the greatest condition but it plays like a dream and at least I wont be too afraid to gig with it like I would if it was pristine.

You'll either love the looks or loathe them. I love how it looks, I love how it sounds, I think I have found my bass.
Nice to see a 'different' Fender. So different I've never actually seen one except in pics.

I like it's quirky look - reminds me of the Parker Fly's in a way.
Yeah, it certainly gets a reaction from everyone who sees it - I certainly don't think that there are many around. I'll try to bring it along to the next bass bash.

Well if you move fast you might be in luck. The guy who sold me mine is selling off one of his others to raise cash. It's in better condition than mine and has a BIN of $700.

Having had it a couple of weeks now I can honestly say that I've not even picked up either of my other basses.
