Squier JV Precision bass, '57 £500

Hi,

This is a bit of a feeler thread, due to the fact I've recently stopped gigging I no longer need a rack of basses, and also whether there will be any interest in this at a value that makes it worthwhile me selling it.

However, this one is a bit special to me, due to the long way I had to travel to collect, the fact I'd gassed for a JV for so long, and the subsequent headache it gave me afterwards! Read below...

It is a 1983 JV '57 reissue with raised A-pole pieces, cloth wire, strap button, reverse tuners, and a genuine Fender gold anodized scratch plate (which I added). Neck date 27/3/83.

When I bought it, I had issues setting the neck relief. Long story short, the truss was maxed out unbeknown to me, and any adjustments were holding for 24 hours then returning to how it was. I think what was happening was twisting the truss, which would then twist back. Eventually it gave way and snapped near the truss nut.

I thought I would have to replace the neck, but using sheer determination I managed to replace the whole truss rod. There is a thread on it here, if you want to read how:

Anyway, the upshot is the neck is now beautifully stable, with a solid truss, and as a result I can set the relief exactly how it should be, which I couldn't before. It's been perfect for the 3 years since I carried out the repair.

Plus, it retains it's originality. The necks on these are fantastic and I really didn't want to have to replace this unless I really had to.

Other than that, it's a great example of a JV; roughly 8.5lbs, minor age-related wear but generally good for it's age. Pickups sound great- just the right amount of growl and vintage tone. Also- the frets were levelled after the repair by my luthier at a cost of £90 which made it set up and play beautifully. Receipt included.

I really don't know how to price this so I've put it at £500 for now. I really believe the neck is far better now than it was before and other than a couple of small scratches to the headstock where the original truss came out it's almost an invisible repair. However, obviously it affects the value so I have tried to be realistic, and hence placed it around a similar value to the heavily modded JV's I've seen for sale.

I would put this up around £700-750 [b]without[/b] the repair, for reference, and to be honest that is what it's still worth to me. However with my current lack of gigging and need for cash, I'm in a position where I have to consider selling.

Nope, 1.625 (42. something!) apparently this was a vintage option, someone may know more than me on that.

Great necks, probably the best P neck I've ever played, the profile is just perfect, and rolled fingerboard edges as well. With the fret levelling job it is definitely the most playable neck I've ever had my mitts on.
