Gibson Melody Maker (Ok, not bass, but...)

I was just perusing the Thomann site for guitars and noticed you can now pick up a Gibson Melody Maker (for those of you not in the know, a slightly stripped down Les Paul favoured by a lot of punk bands) for under £250.00, which is actually less than an Epiphone Les Paul copy.

I haven't a clue where they're made, but it has Gibson on the headstock, which has to be OK by anyone's standards) and much more kudos than Epiphone or say, Harley Benton, even if it plays like a dawg.

Tried one of these a year or so ago. They have a good feel, good neck, unfussy finish, all very Gibson so far. Put plug in and you discover two things. First a biting pickup that could drill teeth (may be the thing to cut through a murky mix, maybe) and second tuners that lose it within the space of one song. MelodyMaker's were made in the 60s, early 70s and acquired a cult status, however the new crop are a very different beast. If the one-trick you want is whiney garage punk voicings check them out.

Sorry; on closer examination, it's the MM type (which I quite like, but def not a P90).

Confusing it with a les Paul MM from a couple of years ago which did have a P90...

My error
