Punch Down ? Connections

Finally decided to fix the project Tune Bass Maniac I've had for a year.

It doesn't use solder for the most part but a punch down connection block like telephones. At the bottom of each slot there's a small hole,do I strip
a wee bit off the cable before inserting it into the hole or do the jaws in the slots slice the covering on the cable ? Or do I go in from the top and bend
the wire into the jaws ?

Seem to remember that's how it works with phones.

Any pointers and corrections to my terminology greatly appreciated.

The insulation is normally left on and the connector slices through in 2 places. Ideally, you would use a special tool that makes sure the wire is pressed fully into the cutting jaws. They're often made of plastic and quite cheap, but you'd need to get the right one.
