Vintage Bass Responsibility?

After looking at the '53 P in the ebay section Here

Me and the missus had a bit of a discussion about if you was seriously loaded and bought this and you could afford another one would you still have a moral responsibility to make sure the instrument stays pristine or is it a case of if you own it you can do what you like?

I may not have explained it well.

It's just a piece of wood with strings on. The market dictates it's value. It may be the biggest pile of cr*p you've ever played. If you have money to burn do with it as you will.
I get a bit p*ssed off when people disrespect instruments.

I had a go at a guy a few weeks ago when he threw his mex strat at a pub gig.
I don't get p*ssed off but I think it's a shame when anybody disrespects his/her equipment. I saw a band at a local pub a couple of months ago. Young guys, Kings Of Leon tribute. Right at the end of their set, the egotistical guitarist/vocalist just drops his guitar to the floor on full volume leaving it wailing. He's probably thinking he's so cool, I'm just thinking, TO$$ER!

My basses come out of their padded bags straight onto their stands. At the end of the night they're straight back in their bags. I don't get distraught if they pick up the odd knock here and there but I try my best to look after them.

I'm of the opinion that a bass is a tool to be used, and not put in a case and revered. That being said, old 50's instruments are getting fairly scarce these days, and I think it would be a shame to destroy what is essentially a piece of history just for the sake of it, because it's yours and you can do what you like with it. If you want to trash a bass, buy a Squier (or preferably a Bongo! :) ) and trash that. I'm a big aviation fan, and love to see old WWII aircraft being flown-some say they shouldn't, that they should be kept grounded and thus preserved, but to me, they were built to fly and that's what I like to see them do. Similarly I like to see old instruments being played, but not trashed. Smashing up instruments was done forty years ago-it's just daft nowadays.

Use it to hammer in nails and play rounders. Fender-heads will pay more for it when it's beaten up. :)
