Recording samples of different basses/amps/cabs... pitfalls

A select band of us will likely as not be getting together on Wednesday night (30-07-08) and blasting a bunch of basses through various amp/cab combinations

I just wondered if people would be interested in the results and maybe highlight any pitfalls.

I'd basically be sticking my b/v mic (Beyer??? 15 years old but cost about £150 back then) somewhere in front of the cabs (static positioning) and doing a 'brief' digital recording (one of those little BOSS 4/32 track recorders) of each of the different combos with the bass and amp recorded flat.

Obviously it's hardly scientific :) so I'm not asking for the top brass to come laying in with derision about room acoustics (a large music room in a school) or the fact that the basses will all be strung differently and the fact that the gain won't be identical on all amps.

Any suggestions as to the best/easiest way to do this that 'might' make it interesting for other BassChatters?

Great idea Mr Hunt ..

I'm sure you know this site, maybe some ideas there ..

It's very good for a number of reasons: he plays exactly the same thing every time so it's easy to hear the differences, and to associate them with the thing he's changed, and he only changes one thing at a time :)

Yes, I've often gone onto BTers and it is great fun just blasting through some of the samples it can be illuminating and I suppose that is the kind of thing I'd like to do. I'm just not sure what the results will be like as we aren't talking studio quality here

Views and tips welcome.

Definitely a great idea!

Following on from OG's comments I'd say that if the same thing is played each time a change is made, it'd make sense to have the same person play it each time as well to keep all things as equal as possible..

Look forward to hearing the outcome of your get-together.. Have fun! :)

To make it fair you need to keep as many things the same as possible... So yeah, same playing, as said above, ideally out of a loop station or phrase recorder or something so its identical. Same position of amp in the room and same micing position, ie on/off axis, near, far. Maybe do each amp with its settings flat, and then one with the settings in what you personally consider to be optimal positioning for you? Not all amps sound perfect flat so I can't see the issue with doing a 'tweaked to perfection' version.
