Any recommendations for in-ear monitoring?

Recommended Posts

The covers band I play in at the moment doesn't have any monitors at all at the moment which is a bit of a problem. Floor wedges are just a trip hazzard in pubs so I was looking at in-ear stuff. Can anybody recommend any systems? We need something for four people. Much cheapness is probably the number one requirement and we don't all go through the PA anyway at the moment so a cheapo mixer is probably on the cards too.

but, but, but...

It's going to be around a grand for the whole shooting match. About 950 quid more than I've got :-(

Seriously, this is going to work out too expensive. Anything a bit more economical, or is that just where it's at and we'll need to forget it for now?

Sadly that's pretty much the deal :)

Feel free to peruse my earlier thread on just such a topic: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=19562

In-ear costs big bucks whichever way you try it, and the 2nd hand market isn't much better. Also, as a word of warning, be sure to check the frequencies available before considering any cheap(er) imports that knock about on ebay. There's a thread somewhere on legal frequencies - i think its a sticky on one of the topic categories

Bit late to the party on this but Thomann's own brand IEMs are fantastic. http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_iem_100_863_mhz.htm

Me and the singer in my band both use them, though ours are an older model than these. Using Shure SLC-3 phones with them, excellent.

Am I right in thinking that you can have one transmitter and several receivers?

Well that depends on how many mixes you need.... if you each need your own mix then you each need a transmitter and receiver..... If your happy to share mixes then you can get away with less Transmitters...

Yes just so you know... If you do go down the Sennheiser route.... Check your buying a real product as Sennheiser are suffering big time from counterfeit copies on e-bay at the moment.... may look the same on the outside, including the clever packaging..... but the RF and AF performance is that of trying to make a telephone call from East Anglia on the Orange network.... :)

Good points. The Thomann ones I linked to are UK legal, but they do make other frequency ranges so make sure you're getting the right ones.
Can they be used in Europe as well as the UK do you know?
They have three or four models, each with a different range of frequencies, one of these will probably do the job for you. I have a feeling that the UK ones, which are the 863Mhz, are in the pan-European deregulated frequencies, so should be legal to use in all EU (and possibly other) countries. Would be worth doing a little Googling to confirm this before you buy though.
