How do I......?

We're looking at covering Inside Looking Out and I want to replicate the tone on the original recording. I have an ancient distortion pedal but I cant get close to what I hear on the record. I'm obviously an effects noob and don't have endless funds for trying different pedals so if anyone know's how I can get close I'd be forever in your debt. I can pay for advice in school age children but I want them back once they have a steady income.

You could try looking for a secondhand multi-fx unit, like a Zoom B3 or B2 depending on your budget. They have lots of different pedals built in so you can try many things, plus if you cover something else in the future and need chorus, wah, delay or whatever you can get a close approximation.

+1. That's exactly what I did about 4 years ago, the idea was to decide which effects I would really need and buy some pedals to replace the Zoom B2. I ended up keeping the Zoom because it was so good and easy to use - although I did buy a Boss limiter off here.
Unfortunately the B2 has finally succumbed to several impacts and liquid spillages, so I cannot change the settings lol.

Also the Mooer units aren't generally worth your time I've found.

I think the shimmerVerb might be alright, but the rest of the stuff ive tried has been dire.

A local guitarist who hasn't used effects for years bought a handful of Mooers recently and has been using them regularly. The reverb seems to be the one he favours the most. It sounds good enough on guitar for live use IMO.
