I ask because on the older models (and IIRC on some of the re-issues) the "cover" is actually part of the pickup magnet assembly, and removing it stops the pickup from working. I have one fitted to my '78 4001. There are a few different styles, I got the one with the thumb recess at the top for the odd occasion I am not using a pick.
