They split and than I'm back to square one. I brought the Wolf Super Endpin rubber ball and its to small for my endpin. Anyone got any better suggestions? sarah thomas Posted October 1, 2013 Share Posted October 1, 2013 Brilliant Owen! My very own rubber bung had started to shred, so I took it to the local shoe menders (cobblers to you). They resoled it for me, like they would a walking stick ferrule, and I'm sure it will last a lot longer than I will. It cost £4. I love these sort of fixes. Not so much luthiery as loofery. TheG Posted October 1, 2013 Share Posted October 1, 2013 (edited) I use a black sheet of rubber that is 5mm thick and around 200mm x 200mm square as one of my solutions rather than a floor protector. An older end pin had a screw on rubber which eventually broke. Great I thought I'll just buy another to screw on. Couldn't find one anywhere so I searched and found a luthier who would make me one (and a spare) up. Unfortunately I could'nt justify spending £15 each. ubassman Posted October 1, 2013 Share Posted October 1, 2013 (edited) All you need is something to stop the bass slipping - for me I leave the bare spike and if its a concrete floor I take a plank of wood - not a very elegant solution but it works just fine ! Rubber caps are cheap and easy to replace so have their place and do the job just fine ...but are always going to fail given 20kg of bass sticking down though a metal rod into soft springy rubber bung!! Alternatively , if you want to spend some dollars theres quite a few solutions already suggested on the '[url="http://basschat.co.uk/topic/217170-double-bass-on-soft-ground/"]playing on soft ground[/url]' thread which might also be of use ...but none of them are rocket science really ! I think I've seen someone with one of these on a double bass but this particular model is for cello. If I found one for bass I would get one because they look excellent. My worry would be that the hole that the end pin fits into isn't big enough. Anyone seen these for sale for a double bass anywhere else? [/quote] Mine is identical, but I don't know where it came from as it came with the bass. The socket that takes the endpin is roomy and has two screws for tightening. I dunno, if we're not talking about how long it is, or is yours thicker than mine, then we're on about screw on rubbers and cobblers. Hathernman Posted October 3, 2013 Share Posted October 3, 2013 Got a rubber end pin protector from the Contrabass shop, about three quid. Came with some good advice - pour a bit of Araldite into the hole and let it dry before fitting to the end pin. Works a treat.
