1. The thing is if the glue and gorilla repair fails it’s likely to be catastrophic and that’s not a point on the bass that you need that to happen. I had a crack in a wooden endpin the forces were so great that I knew it wouldn’t last and didn’t want to imagine what would happen if it failed. I actually ended up putting a hose clip that you tighten with a screwdriver on it which definitely secured the job but the bass sounded different. You could try a similar type of idea if you want certainty but it will look a bit odd. Very secure as a temporary fix though. Feeling your pain though!!
2. No tilt back option. I did think about that at one stage either using a “block“ of some kind or using an amp stand to tilt it back. But the amp head kept sliding off when using a block and I didn’t want to put it on the floor so didn’t explore it too much. But easy enough to experiment with.
3. As stated earlier I didn’t have too good a time stacking the old GK 12 speaker and extension cab and so separated them out. But the phase thing that others have mentioned does seem reasonable at the same time. I’ve got an EA Doubler into a Bergantino 12 inch speaker that I use these days. Like everyone else I had the speaker on the floor by my feet. I found actually hearing myself on every gig was different. So I decided to bring into play my 2nd 12 inch Bergantino extension speaker which I usually save for really loud gigs but use it on lower level gigs too. I stack them one on top of the other there would be no room to separate those out either side of me! I can actually hear myself these days and it’s not a volume thing. Maybe it’s just because the top speaker is higher up or maybe I’ve got clarity with 2 speakers working less hard? Probably a mixture of the two? I do remember talking to someone about the 100/150 watt GK amp and they told me on a louder gig if you push an amplifier too hard it distorts but only subtly so past say 12 o clock position you just get more mush and if you pluck harder it’s just making it worse. This is why more modern amps have bigger wattages for clarity and headroom.
4. I used to play through a GK amp with 12 inch speaker. I bought and extension speaker and took it to a gig one day. I put one on top of the other in a stack and to my surprise it sounded worse!!! I couldn’t believe it! I thought I had just wasted a load of money on this extension cab until I tried separating the two speakers one either side of me. It instantly sounded better and that’s how I had it for ages. I know sometimes space can be an issue but unless you have already try that out to see any difference.
5. I think another VERY important point is to practice relaxing each hand at a time (with and without playing anything). Just try putting each hand in position relaxing and then playing a note, trying that a few times. This will help you get a good hand position as well as relaxing. I play double bass and electric. I also own an NS CRT EUB. Each is definitely a different beast. Although the NS EUB is very similar to a double bass it’s not free standing as it’s on a stand so I feel myself tensing up occasionally because it doesn’t move around freely like a double bass. Hence it can be a slightly different beast to play and why you need to relax. Forcing a hand position on something that isn’t moving freely can add more pressure and feel harder to play. So yeah practicing relaxing and good hand shape. 👍👍👍
6. Ok well I did find it mentioned on a thread. Cutting out thinner foam to the shape of the f hole then adding another piece on top that is slightly bigger! That way you don’t lose the foam. Cool. 👍😎👍
7. Hi Pete I started putting foam in the F hole and I lost some of it in the body!🤣 I realised if I wanted the foam flush with the body it would probably all fall in as there’s not much holding it. I’m going to look for that thread you mentioned but if you do find it post it here. 👍👍👍
8. Ok so I did the 2 gigs. 👍 I liked the idea of covering the sound holes but it was a bit of a harder job than i realised. Thought I could just cover them up but it was a bit tricker than anticipated. So left them open. In the end I got good results from using my trusty BP100 through a Line6 BassPod (with some compression) then into my EA Doubler and two 1x12 Bergantino speakers stacked one on top of each other. I did try the exact same set up first with my Fishman Full Circle and Realist pickups but seemed to get a bit of feedback but only at the top of the volume setting. I’m not sure if I got less feedback issues with the BP100 because the pickup was further away from the body of the bass? Thanks for everybody’s input here anyway and I still might experiment with a magnetic pickup at some point regardless. 🤘🤓🤘
9. Yeah think I agree with you. Looks like it’s got some good handles in good places as well. They all actually look fine to me but I’m drawn the the Stentor one as well.
10. I do really like this idea for other lower volume gigs as you say. I experimented with a Mackie SRM150 but it just didn’t seem to cut it. Maybe it wasn’t powerful enough or maybe just the wrong thing? I’d like to think that this would work being specifically for bass but I’m unsure of the difference.
11. That’s Great!! I’ve got a much more clearer picture now. There’s a few things I can sort out at home (f hole covers and pickups to try) then also a few things I can experiment with on the gig (multiple placement ideas of 2 speakers). I know people have differing ideas about the same pickup so it’s good to hear different opinions on the same pickup. I realised I’ve got an Empress Parametric EQ pedal that you can change the Q setting on as well so that will be useful to try. Although learning on here about hpf cut levels (12db vs 24db etc) the pedal has 15db of cut. But I know it will still be useful. Really appreciate that you all took time out to put up some very detailed answers for me. The gig isn’t yet, I wanted to sort this way out in advance, but I’m going to try a few things out at home and then make a feedback busting itinerary for the day of the gig. 🤘😎🤘
12. Thanks a lot everybody for the advice all excellent stuff to think about. Yeah the subtleties of the sound aren’t so important! 😬 Just got to keep up with his piano going through 2 high powered speakers out the front! 🤣 I’m really not on to a winner 🤣 but just trying to keep up really. He is a good player and I do enjoy it. I’ve played with Boogie pianists before and it’s not about competing with the bottom end but more about complementing what they are doing in a sympathetic way. Yeah I can imagine a magnetic pickup really turning the acoustic bass into an electric bass! Which isn’t a bad thing in certain circumstances. I tried playing double bass in a soul band with my jazz set up which didn’t really hit the mark, an electric bass is what was required. But you live and learn don’t you. Maybe a magnetic pickup would have done it? Anyway yeah I think the other thing mentioned was covering the f holes. I haven’t tried that before at all so that sounds like a really great, simple and obvious idea. I do use an EA Doubler which does have a notch filter on. I’ve tried it in the past but it didn’t seem to do much. Just read the manual which says it’s only available on channel 2 so maybe that’s a case of RTFM!!! 🤣🤣🤣 I also have a Line6 XT Bass modeller which I sometimes use. But I have been in a few loud gigs where you turn the bass down it’s not enough then you turn it back up a bit and it’s too loud. But the Line6 will have a hpf on it somewhere won’t it!! Anyway that’s Great I have a few things to try and if there’s a cheap magnetic pickup out there I could experiment as well. Thanks again everybody. Any more advice feel free to leave it here after today if you want! It’s all useful stuff!! ( Hope you are well BassAce it’s been a while 👍🤓👍)
13. I’ve got a gig coming up with a loud boogie woogie piano player that I’ve played with before. In the past my amp has been on the verge of feedback where I have to leave it. Usually I use a Realist or Full Circle but for these gigs I use a BP100 but it’s still on the verge of feeding back. Would a magnetic pickup be any different at all or should I stick with the BP100? It’s almost like the feedback loop is being amplified by the bass itself? I use a 1x12 cab but do own 2! Not sure if having 2 would make it better or worse? Any feedback ideas at all would be useful. 🤘
14. There’s also Thomas and George Martin in Oxford who were highly recommended by the David Gage shop in New York! I think they are good as well. Otherwise for my sins I take my bass to Laurence Dixon “the bass place” in London who is very knowledgeable and has worked on Christian McBrides bass amongst others. I am from Birmingham myself as well.
15. I’ve got one of these that I use as an alternative for studio work when I don’t want to use a straight pickup. Does need experimenting with but it’s no biggie really, you just move it around. When you put it on there will be obvious spots you won’t want it . Too boomy to weak etc. Then it’s just a matter of narrowing down the smaller area that you like. I haven’t used a preamp with it myself and it doesn’t need phantom so all good there. Sound is half way between a mic and a pickup so very organic sounding. Quality of materials in this pickup is amazing and the putty that you stick it on with is great with no marking of the bass at all. There is a switch on it actually that a lot of people seem to miss. It’s a phase switch, the black bit round the body. If you do get any feedback, switch it and it puts itself out of phase by 180 degrees. Some have said it’s similar to standing further away from your amp. Anyway sorry I’m not a buyer Adrian but am a fan of these pickups.
16. Yeah great guy to deal with always take my bass there and I’m from Birmingham!😬 I’ve also contributed to the crowdfunder So well worth it!
17. Very highly recommended indeed, just bought an EA Amp head! Thanks Clarky!! Never felt so safe in buying an item before! Contact all the way through the transaction and I knew what was going on every step of the way including tracking the package. Very fast delivery as well. If I'd paid a couple of hours earlier it would have come the next day!!!!! Thanks again Clarky nice to do business with you. Cheers Mike
18. Wow!!!! So Im not going mad!!! Thanks BassPod!! Ive been doubting myself for a long time. Thats Excellent! I can sleep at nights now. Thanks Chris as well for the similar Amplified Peg info!!!
19. Hey Chris thanks very much for your reply. I didn't mention that I thought I might be getting it mixed up with that Ampeg story on purpose. But as you have just mentioned it in your reply I think it might be wise to say I have made my story up in my head. I think it originated as your Ampeg story above and I have altered it in my mind over time. Thanks a lot for clarifying that for me.
20. One for the historians! Ok so I vaguely remember reading somewhere that in the earlier part of the 1900's someone made an amp that had a hole in its top. There was an electric upright bass and its end pin fitted in this hole so the bass stood up on its own and there was no need for a lead! I can't find this repeated anywhere! Did I just imagine this and make it up?
21. Great thanks for doing that ped and thanks for your kind words Geoff! Much appreciated.
22. My first YouTube video! Bit weird watching yourself but suppose I'll have to get used to it. There should be more coming anyway. https://youtu.be/mIjT9ddu8xU http://youtu.be/mIjT9ddu8xU
