Here's a great solo with something for everyone - amazing stuff, even if he does resemble a porn star!

It's an extended version of the track from 'Marathon', for those of us who have heard it before. TBH it's about the time I lose interest in the band ('79/'80), but what a great player. Always loved his stuff on the late '70s albums...great all-rounder.

Enjoy!

Resembling a porn star is major asset for any bass player .

Great sound and a superb example of Seventies - style bass playing . Doug Rauch was a difficult act to follow for any bass player and was surely one of the very best bassists of his era , but this chap has got a different style and some great skills of his own .

I've just been digging - it turns out he now works in (as they call it in the US) real estate.

Still playing a bit with the same white P-bass.

Except he's currently in prison for mortgage fraud!

I think the lesson in all of this is never trust a bass player who looks like a porn star to arrange your mortgage , no matter how well he can solo .

Marathon was a superb album. "Aquamarine" being my favourite track.

Definitely the last decent album they made IMHO....then it went downhill fast! Unstoppable until then, though.

And Carlos always filled the bass slot with some seriously tasty players.

It's certainly good for what it is, but what it is isn't particularly interesting.

An extended set tempo jam in E can be limiting. He executes it well but it's basically a series of generic licks stuck together.

This style was popular in the 70's-- busy rhythm playing will lots of fills. It goes with the stache.

Yep, awesome vid.
love David Margen's basswork on the studio bit of Moonflower.
His P-bass tone is great - hot and spanky here on the track Zulu.
The part at around 1.40 is so rude.

Well, it is to me! I think your comment would have benefitted from an "IMO"... :)

That said, I do think that this live "extended" version doesn't actually improve on the studio version of Runnin'. Maybe he used up all his good ideas in that 1:27 or whatever is was?

DM also played on two of Carlos' finest solo albums - 'Oneness', and the the electric bass parts on 'The Swing Of Delight'. Acoustic bass was from Ron Carter.

For any who haven't heard these two - fantastic records - and once again, some seriously tasty playing from DM.
