Sale of Goods Act covers you upto 6 years. I took a 3 year old Xbox 360 back for free repairs due to poor workmanship.

5 years in England. 6 years in Scotland.

But after the first 6 months the burden of proof is on the buyer to show that the faults were there at the beginning, not on the vendor.

Isn't it the other way around? 6 years in England & Wales & 5 up here. I assumed that the OP bought the amp in England too.

He would indeed have to prove that it was a faulty part, an engineer's report does the job. :)

Nah - the buyer still has the 6 year limitation period, but the upper courts decisions in England and Wales have stuck with 5 years.

Engineers reports are great, but as with all expert evidence, often a report can easily show what is wrong - just not when it was wrong. Unless it is obvious that nothing has been done to the inside of the amp at all, therefore allowing a reasonable conclusion that it was like that when it left the factory.

Small Claims Court is very low risk though.
