New Gedo Upright

Just took the plunge and bought myself a new bass. It's a blonde laminate from Gedo. The cost was £700 all in. It was a bit of a gamble because i hadn't even seen it in the flesh but Gedo seem to have a decent rep for customer service. I've also got a sneaky feeling that the well-respected low-end Thomann stuff is actually Gedo with a mark-up added on.
It took just under a week to arrive from Germany. It would have been quicker but i asked them to fit an adjustable bridge and different strings from the stock model and they had to order the bridge.

The set-up seems pretty good to me. I know very little about it, but the action seems about right from what i've been reading and the nut and bridge slots are tidy and follow the finger board curve.

The finish is what i was expecting at this price. It's rough as a dog from 3 inches away, but beautiful from 5 yards so that's fine by me.
The ebony board is smooth with no buzzes or rattles. I've read about some cheap basses having great globs of glue inside etc and i've gotta say there's none of that here. It's obviously finished to a price but it's not hopelessly untidy inside.

I got a bow with it, which is, err, definitely a bow. That's all i know about bows.

The bag is thin and unlikely to survive more than a week before it falls apart. In fact, i may put the bag inside the bass to protect it.

The delivery firm were supposed to call me a day before delivery, which they didn't. The box has a 'tilt sensor' on it which had been activated but it was undamaged inside so nil points for the courier but i got it in one piece and i think Gedo would have sorted out any problems.

These negative points are exactly what i was expecting at this price. The bass itself and Gedo's service i'm delighted with.

The packing...

And the biggest surprise...it fits in a Kia Picanto.

Thanks for the comments :) I'm having a great time with it, i wish i'd bought one years ago.

This is not helping my gas! :gas:

I was hoping this would keep my GAS at bay for a few weeks at least. Not so. Now i need different strings, pickups, preamp, case, stand, shades... etc...

Haha I've just been through it with the electric upright, spiros at £150, bow another £100 , still need a stand and a few lessons once doddy gets back from his tour!

I like the Framus one in the for sale section :)

That Framus is indeed gorgeous.

Looks really nice, i recently ordered a new case from gedo music and they were really helpful and very quick in delivering it. My only gripe with the bass is that in Thumb position and moving into thumb position wouldn't your arm be more likely to drop? Maybe watch out for bad habits up there.

Cheers! Their service was brilliant. The first email i sent them was at 9pm, in English, and i got a response 20 minutes later. I'm sure you're right about the cutaway. It suits me because all i do is go plonk boom twang in a rock n roll band but i can see how it could be a problem for anything more challenging.

I've never had the chance to try one with that cutaway, but I'd have thought that getting into in the 'D' thumb position would be much easier. I've yet to find a pin length or bass angle that lets me do that 100% reliably without the forearm being obstructed.

Mind you, grass is greener etc. :)

Can't really help you with thumb position sorry. How i play, that end of the fingerboard sees as much action as the opposition goalkeeper at an England match.

I can tell you that i can play to high B on the G string unobstructed standing alongside it. (not playing thumb position stylee)

Standing behind it, doing my best guess at how to play thumb position, i can just start to feel the bass touching my forearm at D#.
But, i don't know the correct technique so don't read much into that. :)

Not yet dude. I'm still on my PA overhaul, it's transformed my gigging experience beyond belief.

I got a phonecall from a couple of band members today... looks like they are making steps towards upgrading their inears....

Plus I don't think I've got any room to get an upright in the car.

Roof rack?
