But they still go into the tone shaping circuit of the amp which ought to be more powerful than anything you can fit into a bass control cavity.

You're surely not suggesting a connection between physical size and tone affecting abilities?

Only that it's way easier to design a good tone circuit when you don't have to fit it into the average bass guitar control cavity and power it from PP3 batteries. And more than doubly so if you wan to use valves.
