Hi All,

I'm probably going to regret this, but I am selling or trading my 1980 Limited Edition Ibanez Musician Bass.

This bass took me a long time to find and a fair amount of money to secure.

The reason I am selling is fourfold - a) I'm getting married and money would be good b ) Its not getting the use it deserves because I am simply just not gigging much at the moment c) I have two other Musician basses which are non original and cosmetically not as pleasing, so in truth prefer to gig with them d) I quite fancy trying something new.

As far as my research tells me these musician basses were made as examples for the german trade market - there doesn't seem to be any definitive production number but it would seem to be a very short run. This particular bass is a maple neck through with (I think) walnut wings faced with zebrawood.

The bass is all original bar the battery cover which was missing when I brought it. I purchased a replacement from a guy in the states who makes them to the original design.

Points to note for the purposes of honest description

The bass has a few little dings as you would expect from a 33 year old gigged instrument.

It would benefit from a setup. Could do with some truss rod tweeking I suspect. There is some rattle with the action as low as it is which doesn't bother me, but am aware it upsets some folk.

Its a heavy old beast !

The rear pickup output isn't as punchy through the active circuit as I would like, more Jazz bass than Alembic (the front one sounds superb..) This is common on these early musician basses, but may be indicative of components needing replacement / pickup needing a rewind. Please note though that the active circuit is fully functional in terms of EQ etc.

The aforementioned battery compartment is lacking a screw - this is pure laziness on my part. I just taped it shut with electrical tape (no residue !) and haven't got myself to the screw shop (make of that what you will...) to source a replacement.

I have an original Ibanez Vault case for it to live in - not in perfect condition but original none the less.

Cash wise I would like £1000

I'm aware this is a lot for a Japanese instrument - and will probably only appeal to collectors, but I think this will appreciate in value.

It starts to look like a bargain when you consider that the 2010 limited edition ones are selling for £7k ;-)

Trade wise I'm open to graphite necked Headlesses (e.g. Steinbergers or Statuses) or perhaps an interesting Sandberg.

Might also be interested in lightweight cabinets of the Markbass variety - particularly if anyone has one of the 3x12 neo cabs around.

Bass is located in Huddersfield West Yorkshire.

Thanks For Looking

OK, I borrowed one of these about 9 years ago for a few months and I can confirm that it is the best sounding bass I have EVER played. Definitely worth the asking price, especially in this good condition! Those huge single coil pickups really pack a punch! Treat yourself ;)

This is what worries me. Took me a very long time to find this and a lot of horse trading to buy it..suspect I am unlikely to ever find another.

Awesome :D First time playing there myself! It looks much cooler than the first venue I ever played at which was a cramped little pub in Northampton called the Punch And Judy

As I recall it was in a marquee outside as part of an arts festival. Remember being confused by the presence of monitors (''aren't these speakers facing the wrong way ?'') Dont know the punch and judy but have fond memories of a night in The Roadmender many years ago :)

I used to go to to the Roadmender's under 18 nights when they had bands on, after craftily swigging bottles of cheap booze outside ;). Good fun! The Punch and Judy was on the same street as the Soundhaus (RIP!). I remember InMe were playing the same night but they had sold out so a lot of people who couldn't get in came to see us instead... Packed the place out! Result!

What a beauty! The finish is original? Havent seen yet : )
Hi William,

Yes, the finish is original. The standard Musician basses for this year were as far as I know either natural (light wood) or stained dark wood one piece body 'wings'. This one has a cap on the front and back of the wings - I have been told its zebrawood, and a matching headstock veener. So its a different construction and finish from 'standard' musicians.

My photos don't really do it justice.

Cheers

Graham

Hi Gray dont want to upset you mate but i think when you have sold the bass you are really going to wonder what have i done , i bought a musician bass about 2 years ago and love it i have loads of cheap basses also a rickenbacker 4003 a musicman a fender precision usa 2 warwicks and loads more but when i want to show of my basses i go for the musician first. IF you do sell it whoever gets it is going to get a real fantastic bass i am left handed and if that was a lefty i would be at your house with a big handfull of money and snap your hand of before you changed your mind.Hope i dont offend you mate and good luck with the sale.

Hi Hadge,

Thanks for the advice mate, not offended at all. The thought has occured to me, that I will regret selling it. I've had a few Musician basses over the years and I spent a long time looking for one of these limited edition ones.

The way I'm thinking about it is that its going towards my wedding,so it will make my missus happy, which has got to be worthwhile. I also hope that I can use some of the cash to get my 'original' Musician (which I brought far to long ago) sorted out in terms of pickup and finish.

The limited edition is as good as I thought it would be - but to be honest I've got to many basses for someone who isn't gigging enough.

As the gigs I'm doing have got smaller I'm less and less inclined to take instruments I care about to them - I hate watching stands / cases all night ! So, I'm now gigging with a bass that is, I grant you pretty cool and plays well (its a Sandberg) but doesn't really have much emotional investment.

I'm hoping that whoever buys it will get the use out of it deserves.

I'll keep an eye out for any left hand ones ! (I wonder if they made any ???)

Cheers

Gray
