Entwistle is a funny one. He's my favourite least favourite bass player.

I absolutely love his lines but hate his tone. He was an amazing talent, I just wish I could have rolled back the treble on his amp and taken the batteries out of his bass.

TBH ive listened to a bit of the who and i knew he was good but never realised he was that good, I actually really like his tone, i try to get that sound myself anyway but, yeah that much treble would probably annoy hell out of me!

I love that vid, he has such a relaxed style of playing. There is also this one which is the isolated bass to Won't Get Fooled Again.

AHH you beat me to it.

Please dont shoot me!

I am a fan of John Entwhistle and The Who...

but I really think that solo is p*sh, it makes no sense? It sounds so trebley. The active electronics are so thin and overdriven that you cant make the notes out or any real 'scale/key/structure' he attempting to put together.

Sorry John not a goody for me! :)

Watching the wont be fooled again video got me thinking?? I wonder if Harry sheare based his character 'Derek Smalls' from Spinal Tap on John Entwhistle?

Im notorious on here for my obsession with JAE blah blah blah................

BUT, I do agree with andy67 on this one. I have the DVD from which this is taken. His playing overall in the concert is fantastic, but the "camera on the stock" solo in 5:15 was dire. It showed none of his old dexterity or scale work. his tone towards the end of his life got worse, he had it like that to hear himself.

To see him at his best, seek out the bass solo (at 4min 14secs) Amazing Journey (Tommy Live in 1989),

and 70s stuff or his bass work on the Who song Dreaming From the Waist.

Also a long, long time fan of the man, and I didn't much like it either. I don't think he's ever bettered his playing on Live at Leeds, or had a better tone (from a Precision).

Won't Get Fooled Again: I like that because he's almost as sloppy as me without drums and guitar to hide behind! But hear the same take with the whole band from that dvd and it's spine-tingling towards the end.

A few years back I was watching a documentary/rockumentary on the Who. Part of this interview was a one on one with John discussing his playing style and technique, he demonstrated how he played and explained why he played like this...it was awesome! Just him his bass and a practice amp, the sound was great the technique was...well only his and the inspiration I got from it was tremendous.

Wish the producers had elaborated on this as I could have watched this for hours instead of a few minutes..
