Graham Posted May 23, 2012 Share Posted May 23, 2012 Last night at the local jam night, I finally tried my mate's '79 Fender Precision and fell in love with the neck, just so comfotable - seemed to fit my hand perfectly; so inevitably, GAS set in. Now, a genuine late 70s P is almost certainly out of my price bracket as I'll have to sell gear to pay for it and the way the market is at the moment I'm going to have to take a hit on value to sell some things. However a used USA or Japanese should be fine, so my question is, what models would have a neck profile the same or similar to my pal's? Doesn't have to be Fender, any precision really. MrFingers Posted May 23, 2012 Share Posted May 23, 2012 The American Std. will come very close, having the same width at the nut, but I think the seventies neck is just a tad thicker (from fretboard to back), not much, just a little bit. You have to keep in mind that the neck of the AmStd is finished in a satin finish, silky soft, while the vintage neck is finished in rockhard thick glossy polyester. [/quote] Satin is IMO "faster" and easier to play than gloss but doesn't look as nice. The american standard will also have "rolled edges" which again, IMO is nicer. If you want to go even thinner than an american standard then you could go for an american special (my favourite bass neck). I think all modern Fenders are far nicer to play on than vintage ones, which is what they are going for. Try some out at a store and you'll see what I mean . bremen Posted May 23, 2012 Share Posted May 23, 2012 I had a 79 fretless, was wide but very shallow from front to back, is this like your mate's? closest I've found is a crafted-in-japan; others have been slightly deeper. you could try Warmoth, they now do a choice of depths in a wide selection of materials. quality is excellent.
