Kirky Posted April 16, 2008 Share Posted April 16, 2008 Hi, I stumbled across this site last year after answering an newspaper ad to join a local functions band as a bass player. I’m usually a guitarist but have always had a bass lying around at home and seriously got the bass bug when I filled in at short notice at a local jam night last year. The forum has already been an immensely valuable source of information as I embark on my bass playing career. You are a bunch of truly passionate and insanely knowledgeable people! I play a 1970’s Fender Musicmaster bass that I bought in 1988 or thereabouts. I also have a defretted Warwick Rockbass that occasionally gets some use. I’d like to upgrade to a Jazz in due course (but I’m not sure how I’ll handle a full scale bass). I’m currently playing through the PA for band practices and will be buying an amp at some stage soon. (All gigs with the band thus far have been filling in for the indisposed guitarist so I haven’t needed a bass amp yet). Whilst the forum has provided a lot of information to help me purchase the right rig, I remain somewhat overwhelmed by the number of fundamental choices – combo, separates, pre-amp and PA/monitors…! I play rockabilly, country, rock’n’roll etc on guitar (and make no apologies for doing so!). I prefer to play Motown / ballads on the bass. Favourite basslines are “Ball of confusion” (Temptations) and “Sing Harpy” (The Fall). Favourite bass part is “What becomes of the broken-hearted” (Jimmy Ruffin) for its diligent avoidance of the root. I also play and teach piano and passed grade 8 music theory when a youngster and still remember most of it. I’m happy to help out with any theory questions that seem to arise now and then. That’s me!
