GarethFlatlands Posted December 18, 2011 Share Posted December 18, 2011 I'm learning some basic walking lines to basic chord progressions and wanted to know if there were any good, and free, backing tracks anyone knows of. It's all fine on your own but it would be better knowing I'm intonating properly and the lines work with the chords before I get into any bad habits. Some of them have accompanying books of transcribed bass lines from the likes of Ron Carter, Rufus Reid, Tyrone Wheeler, Bob Cranshaw and others. If they're simple 2 chord ones like the earlier exercises in 'The Evolving Bassist' I mkight just bit the bullet and do them myself in Reaper. sarah thomas Posted December 18, 2011 Share Posted December 18, 2011 You might like Walking Jazz Lines for Bass by Jay Hungerford - it takes you through walking blues lines, rhythm changes and some standards. It's aimed at the bass guitar, but other than a couple of pages at the start, I can't see that it wouldn't work just as well for the upright. I find it easier to get to grips with than Aebersold, who throws in loads of chords. And of course, various Aebersold books are available as illegal downloads on torrents which I only mention as a caution because I know you would wish to avoid such nefarious activity. Yes you could program your own progressions, but to me there's a real benefit to be gained from playing along with world class players. I've started using them lately, and it's great to be able to turn off the bass, play away and then do it again with Ron Carter or some such godlike figure showing how it could be done. Just type in the chord changes, select a style of your choice, press play and you have a whole arrangement that you can switch individual instruments in and out of.
