It's what they did best, they did a lot of support slots. I had a brief "chat"with their singer/guiatrist John Reid(??) for a while years ago. He said they became known for blowing away the headliners which I believed - until he said that included Slade in '78 - which just didn't happen - I was there.

Sorry to hear that Gordon Rowley had passed away. As you said in an earlier post he was a fine player and visually commanding on stage. Strife were just a bit before my time but I did see him play in Nightwing in 1981. Very striking with that huge mane of red hair flying around as he played.
As for my fave P bass lines well there are dozens of them and many bands have already been listed. However, here's a P bass sound that (although it may be tweaked with an effect perhaps?) I've always liked and in particular scroll to the cool riff at 5:40. Also of interest is that it is Ian Anderson playing this bassline. John Glascock (another fine player) was too ill to manage more than 2 or 3 tracks on the album and Anderson did the rest. Glascock died not too long after from a heart condition:

Love the way it goes from huge growl to sweet round tones and back on this one:

And, featuring the most tasteful ten second bass solo ever at 3:30 -

Mega-unlurk, I picked up the bass very late on after a few years of listening to this guy play. I love the sound he produces here. Travelling to the US 2 weeks from now, rare chance to see him play the same stuff....

Too many! Loads to choose from my personal faves - Phil Lynott, JJ Burnell, Bruce Foxton, Steve Harris, Colin Moulding, James Jamerson (to name but a few) but I'm going with Norman Watt-Roy's P-bass tone and fantastic line on Ian Dury & The Blockheads' 'My Old Man'.
