warwick thumb bo control knob problem

I am having an intermittent problem with the stacked pick up pan/volume control on my 1998 warwick bolt on ( the knob nearest the fretboard) The sound occasionally cuts out and i have to pull the knob out to hear sound; presumably disabling the active preamp. Then a few minutes later, the sound returns! I was wondering if anyone has any ideas.. is it just a faulty control or is it more complicated? I am in salisbury and there doesn't seem to be a warwick dealer near me..

many thanks

I had a similar problem on my Corvette, had to replace the push/pull volume pot as it was an intermittent fault.

You'll be glad to know it's an easy job, probably less happy to learn that the parts from Warwick costs £70:

I think there's a link in that thread to a site with a cheaper alternatives

I had similar probs with my '93 b/on when in active mode, vol pot became scratchy & cut out intermittently, cured it by using a "bucket " load of switch/ contact cleaner, warwick pots are difficult to squirt cleaner into ,I unbolted mine & squirted cleaner into every orifice I could see, keep rotating pot while you do this & also pull switch in & out, took several attempts to do this, worth the effort tho' as the old thumb has been trouble free for over a year since I last did this.

WARNING on no account use WD40 to do this,if you don't have electrical contact cleaner, sometimes known as switch cleaner, you can buy something suitable from Maplins, best of luck, mike

I'm sure you checked the battery first tho, also make sure the battery clip is secure on both the contacts of the pp3, have known them spread apart allowing the contact to make & break with vibration, can't think of anything else.

I had a similar problem with my Warwick Thumb. And I had to replace the pot. It was not that expensive. MEC part are expensive but not that much as listed by Lemmy.
You can check it directly at Warwick shop: http://shop.warwick.de/index.php?cat=c93_Potentiometer.html
What costs 68Euro (and this is not £70) is a module (pot + printed circuit board + sockets). The pot itself costs (only :) ) 18 Euro. This is very far to £70. And I bought this pot (but I don't remember where) for 8-10 Euro. Of course you need to unsolder the pot from the printed board (which is not that easy because the is double-side board). I did this without any problems (but you may need a hot air gun).
Anyway, since the parts are so expensive, you have to be sure that the pot is causing problems.

Had similar prob with my tone stack and did the electronic circuit board cleaner suggested earlier.
Solved it and it was a few yrs back.

Worth a try.

Usually dust getting onto the slider in the pot.
