aceuggy Posted March 23, 2011 Share Posted March 23, 2011 (edited) Hi, I have recently bought a Fender P bass. It sounded lovely which is why I bought it but the action was a little high. I tried to adjust it by fiddling with the bridge and that helped, but still was a bit high so I took it to a guy I know, he makes guitars for a living. He's had a look and reckons the neck is more or less knackered! He's straightened it out as best he can, but it appears the neck is slightly twisted, so one side plays good, but the other is not so good. Also the machine-heads are on the way out also. Quite a story of woe. However I thought I might get a replacement neck and tuners, maybe change the bridge. I didn't spend a fortune on the bass in the first place (£300), so don't want to spend too much doing it up and have seen this website where I could get everything I need for less than £200. Do you think this would be worth doing? xilddx Posted March 23, 2011 Share Posted March 23, 2011 Looks like a waste of time to me. How old is the bass? If it's old it may be worth saving, but is there no chance of a refund from the seller? Probably not as you bought it face to face from what you said. If you take it to a good luthier they will be able to defret it, reshoot the fingerboard to make it level, then refret it. Makes more sense than getting a new neck. aceuggy Posted March 23, 2011 Author Share Posted March 23, 2011 Maybe a second hand neck is the way to go then. It's ironic, I have owned three Squier basses and been pleased with them all. I still have a nice CV P bass, but thought I fancied a Fender. Although the tone of the Fender I think is superior, I never had any issues with the other basses. watchman Posted March 28, 2011 Share Posted March 28, 2011 Or, if you can be bothered, you could sell the serviceable parts of what you have and put the dosh towards another bass. The thing is, the neck's really the be-all and end-all of an instrument since it is the part you most notice the feel of and a major contributor to the sound. If you're going to replace the neck, tuners and bridge I'd say be very sure that the body and electronic parts are exactly what you want first. Because if I were in your position the idea of building exactly what I wanted from parts (and from scratch) might well appeal. Funds permitting, of course - the old bugbear. I have decided to swap the neck out so I have a Mighty Mite neck winging it's way to me as I type I am changing the tuners to Schaller and have bought a Gotoh 203 bridge. Will add a bridge and pickup ashtray because I like that look and might as well get some new strings as well. I like a nice deep bass sound so any recommendations on strings welcome.
