I'm mainly wondering can fifty quid purchase something that's actually playable? If I were to purchase one and it'd feel good enough, then just think if I were to slap in some Nordstrand pick-ups and an East pre-amp 300£ worth of electronics on a 50£ bass Anyways, I've always wanted to try a bass with a guitar scale, but I'm afraid it might be a total waste of a hundred quid (the shipping costs are around 40£ to Finland). Grand Wazoo Posted September 14, 2010 Share Posted September 14, 2010 (edited) Don't know about those but a few years back I bought my son his first bass and that was a Johnson short scale P-Bass which played really well and was quite a nice bass. As for the nut, it's a bit wide, it'd be more suitable for thin spaced 5ers, but it's not bad as a 4 string. I might just get one, and if I realize I've no use for it, I could pass it on to someone younger who is being curious about basses or guitars. Especially as I'm always encouraging parents with young children to suggest their children to try out any sort or form of music. I always had the urge to play guitar since I was eight years old or so, however it wasn't before I was thirteen until I got my first acoustic and shortly moved to bass.. It plays amazingly well!!!! The neck's straight, the action was high - fixed by lowering the saddles - and the frets are surprisingly good! The E string was a bit quieter than the others but I put some stronger springs under the pickup & lifted the bass side up toward the string & it's fine now. The strings are not at all flappy as I thought they might be & apart from the fact they are a bit clangy as they are new, it sounds great - I'm really surprised. It feels like a toy, though, and it has a bit of neck dive, believe it or not!! If I can get a set of Roto 88s for it (anyone got some?) I think it'll be amazing. It's the same size as my Strat!! I also have a Schaller 3D bridge in the drawer....... For £55 it's pretty d*mn good. EDIT: Just to say thanks to those offering strings, and that I'm fixed up now. G.
