1. The Fender Modern Player short scale jazz is a lovely bass (if you can find one) but has only 18 frets (might not be an issue for you). As ead pointed out there is my own SWB-1 Standard now available to pre-order which you'll find in the affiliates section with a 5% discount. This was originally my own personal project but so many people started asking if they could buy one that I decided to try and make it happen. :-) The Richwood 3/4 basses are lovely, but a bit small and very hard to find. Then there are the SX offerings available via Rondo in America. Also Shredneck I've noticed do a P-J bass here - http://www.shredneck.com/?page_id=1616 That's all I can think of at the mo'
2. Well there has been a lot going on over the past few months with regards to the SWB-1 Standard. After the first samples arrived (which I was delighted with) I started playing bass with Big Country. I've done almost all the shows using the passive SWB-1 Standard bass and couldn't be happier!! It's standing up to the road really well and the band, fans and sound engineers keep commenting on the tone it's producing. One very busy and experienced engineer said it was the best bass sound he'd ever heard and had the eq on the desk completely flat (which was nice lol). I've used the 'Standards' on numerous recording sessions too, again with nothing but good comments on the tone of these things. Chris from Parr Street Studios in Liverpool was all over it! :-) Some more great news you can nowpre-order them in the affiliates section with a substantial discount here... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/273879-scott-whitley-swb-1-standard-short-scale-bass-pre-order-now/page__pid__2915705#entry2915705 Here's a video of the passive version live with Big Country.... https://youtu.be/KiB4UJX4D0Q And here's the active version on a live studio recording I did recently.... https://youtu.be/8ZQUn0ijTOY
3. Dearmond Jetstar Bass. Fabulous early 90's Short Scale. USA pickups! These are a pretty rare thing to find. Generally excellent condition for a 20-odd year old bass. There are a few marks and scratches but overall it really does look superb! It has the original USA pickups but I re-wired it as the orginal pots were shot-at. It's got my preferred 3-way pickup selector, volume and tone configuration. Easy to put back to vol/.vol/tone if wished. :-) The sound of this bass is outstanding - it's almost Alembic with both pickups on; very earthy and fat on the neck pickup and tight/Jaco-esque on the bridge pup. Basically a great all rounder which actually can sound very modern and great for slap if that's your thing... Like the Jazz I have for sale, this bass graced numerous stages with the Animals and I also used it on a session at Parr Street Studios (see pic below) where it sounded amazing. I'd love to just hang on to it, but I'm really into my SWB-1 Standard project so room and funds are a higher priority at the mo'. Thanks for looking Scott.
4. Fender Jazz Modern Player Short Scale Bass in lovely condition - pretty much as new... Hear & see it in this video - Love this bass but as my SWB-1 Standard thing is taking off I need to make room/money for stock really, Used this bass on a few Animals dates plus 3 studio sessions and it sounded superb all round! VERY playable bass, and the build/fit/finish quality is as good as it gets - absolutely flawless!!! Definitely as good as any Jap or USA Fender I've ever owned. Hard to find as they are discontinued! I will take more pictures later, but rest assured it's immaculate. (Case not included) Cheers, Scott.

9. I reckon it just demonstrates how good these Chowny basses are - those strings have sounded awful on some of my basses!
10.
Great vid Scott - what made you go for one of your least-favourite sets of flatwounds?
Lol - well spotted! In truth it was simply availability! The only flats I could get locally were the Rotosounds and I wanted to use the bass the next day on an Animals gig (impatient I know). Tbh they sound better on this bass than on any other I've tried 'em on. Will be trying some Thomastiks at some point for sure. :-)
11.
Scott, very nice demo, what flatwounds are you using?
Cheers! :-) I'm using Rotosound Monel Medium Scale (although a short scale bass, you need medium scale strings because of the floating bridge/tailpiece setup - short scale strings are too short!). They're not my favourite strings by a long shot but they actually work very well on the Chowny!
12. Good day people of basschat.co.uk!!! I recently was asked to shoot a 'tapping for bass' video tutorial, so I did lol! I'm not an expert in the technique, but I do use it here and there. Hopefully this short series of lessons will help some folks get a grasp on the basics of how to tap....
13.
...and very nice too..! You do the bass proud. The one major problem..? My appetite has been whetted..! How the heck will I be able to explain that to SHMBO..? Hmm...
:-D
14. I filmed a video review/demonstration earlier today of my Emarald Burst Chowny CHB-1! Here it is....
15. Just found a clip of the Chowny from yesterday's gig.....
16.
Dammit, these look excellent! Probably a silly question but with a hollow body like this do you still get acoustic feedback like a full acoustic bass would or do they behave more like a solid body?
Not a silly question at all :-) These (like many) have a solid block in the middle so they behave really well in terms of feedback. If you play VERY loud and use a lot of drive/compression then they may be more likely to feed, but in a nice way - not like a full acoustic.
17. Hi all - I'm a bit of a latecomer to this thread..... I received my Emerald-burst Chowny CHB-1 on Wednesday. Straight out of the box it played amazingly! Most times when I buy a bass (new or used) I have to do a considerable amount of setting up before it plays anything like comfortable. The only bit of setting up I needed to do to make things perfect for me was to file the nut down a little. I've not purchased a new bass yet where this wasn't required so nothing unusual there. The overall finish is first class - looks very expensive!!! The colour if beautiful in the flesh. It's nice and light and acoustically sounded outstanding! Another massive pleasant surprise was there wasn't one single low or proud fret!!! No nasty fret buzz anywhere. Plugged in the tones are knockout - and FAR more versatile and usable in the 'real' world than a vintage Rivoli and the like. The sound is nice and focused with strong but not overpowering mids, even on the neck pickup, but that 'Chas Chandler' vibe is still there in spades if you roll the tone off a little!!! But as well as that vintage 60s tone, you can get some really 'contemporary' bright tones out of it. The bridge pickup does that 'Jaco' thing like you wouldn't believe and it's surprisingly got a knockout slap tone (pretty unusual in my experience for a semi). Speaking of that Chas tone - it sounded so good for that that I decided to take it the next day with me to Sweden where I was gigging with the Animals on a 24 hour cruise. All the rest of the band were knocked out with it, both visually and tonally! Those iconic bass intros to 'We Gotta Get Out of This Place' and 'It's My Life' sounded the best they have in the 2 1/2 years I've been doing the gig!! I should point out I've put flatwounds on it for a more authentic 60s vibe. I get s little bass solo feature in the set so I just whacked the bridge pickup on for maximum poke and the solo cut through brilliantly. I'm back in the UK now getting ready and waiting to use it on its second gig with The Animals at Concert at The Kings in All Cannings - http://www.concertatthekings.co.uk/ We're on at about 2pm just before Howard Jones if anyone local wants to give the bass a listen... I can honestly say this is the best semi-acoustic bass I've ever played (and I've played/owned quite a few). Stephen Chown has done us all proud with this bass and I feel proud to be one of the first Chowny Bass owners!
18. Here's a new lesson on the classic Abraham Laboriel bass line for "Bullet Train! It's a really cool groove - dead 'vintage' sounding :-) Have fun with it....
