I don't think I can add anything to this thread, partly because I know nowt, and partly because all the expected posts are already in. I'd really like to know who your '3 others' are though?

His 3 others were Sid Vicious, Guiggsy from Oasis and Peter Hook!

Hey, someone insulted Vai and Satriani in this thread! Just because it is instrumental does not make it wrong. Vai can perhaps be a bit much but his early stuff had very interesting backing arrangements (listen to the BACKING on Passion and Warfare - it is far more informative than the lead guitar lines).

As for Satriani, his early stuff sounds scratchy tone-wise and there are many long runs, but if you listen to his phrasing it is all based around singing the parts. He had lessons with Lennie Tristano who would make him sing the melodies scat-style. Listen to his melody lines and timing and notice that they are mostly hum-able. There may be bursts of speed but who walks the same speed for their entire life? Sometimes you must run. You do not saunter everywhere.

I would disagree that it is "showing that you can play for the sake of it" instead of melodies. It is like jazz - I did not understand it at all and could not hear the melodies, being used to rock and pop, so I bought a book on jazz and read it to understand in general terms what was going on. Some of it I don't understand still, but you listen to it differently and listen for interplay, not necessarily melodies that you can hum. I think this was what someone was saying earlier about "not getting it"; perhaps they mean that we're listening for the wrong thing in it, or expecting it to be different. I don't "get" hip-hop but I wouldn't assign all of it to the dustbin - I just don't know what to listen for in it, other than the world's loudest drum sound with poetry over it?

I had not heard Jaco so bought his solo CD which I was initially disappointed in, as I was expecting non-stop playing all the way through. His flash bass parts are very impressive and I sadly cannot play them at all. In any case after repeated listens and attempts to understand what he is doing I now think it is a good album. For me, the move moving parts of music on it don't really feature the bass, nor do they feature overly complex routines like "Come On Over".

Whenever I hear this album it makes me want to pick up the bass and play, so that's a good thing. Flea does the same for me, although I am not a fan of all his music either. Jaco does not make me want to dance to Portrait Of Tracy, and I suspect that's not what he was aiming to do with that song.

With regards to Vai it's all about context and what he was trying to achieve musically.

If he was shredding over 3 min pop songs I'd accept he was just a shredder. However, his composition are about being musically advanced and interesting. This doesn't mean it's bad cos it's not pop. Look at Mozart, Stravinsky etc. all there music contains fast musical passages. Does this. Make them shredders? violin w***ers?

  3. Mine arrived yesterday. Just had a go.

I definitely agree that it lacks a bit of growl but it does have a bit of beef. Certainly gonna be loud enough. I had it through my GK MBE 212 first gain on 7, master on 2. It was plenty loud. Tried it with gain on 3 master on 4-5 loud again. i will be using it with the GK and an Ashdown 1x15 ther will be no Volume problem.

I then put an Hartke bass attack thru the effects loop and got a variety of good tones. Also i was using my Fender jazz 62 reissue fretless. The strings are dead, years old, so that won't have helped.

To be honest i didn't really mess with the eq. Just put all the knobs at 12 o clock and used the hartke. That's how i will be using it. For 80 quid it's a bloody bargain.

I used to hate them when i was younger then one day I just fancied one. Now i think they are beautiful. Saying that I fancy a P bass now but i constantly swap between love and hate with them and i don't even own one.

I found this page seems to explain it well
Nice one, I'll let him know what he's got........or maybe not. Tell him it's sh*t and I'll take it off his hands.

Or, when the behringer arrives, do like discreet did. Bang an Ampeg badge on it and swap it around and hope he doesn't notice! Mwahh ha ha haa!

Plus, if i get busted, I can blame that on discreet too! (that will be 2 times)

Is it any good? You are a bass player, right?
Why do I never find things like this just lying around?? :(
Yeah, i know ampeg is good. But I've never owned a valve amp. It's not mine anyway. Plus on here you do here ampeg getting slagged occasionaly. I didn't know where this falls in the range of ampeg or if it was a tube pre or all valve.

I could have googled all that but then where would the BC chat fun come in. I'm trying to stay away from OT nowadays so trying to get my kicks in different parts of the forum

  7. The guitar player in my band owns his own recording/rehearsal studio. Today i found this gathering dust in a corner. Apparently it's broke. Needs new valves. I don't know loads about amps, anyone know much about it. Is it any good, worth much etc. It's an Ampeg V4BH.

    Here are some sh*tty pics!

  8. Right, just ordered one off Thomann. I blame you Discreet. I was first made aware of them by a comment of yours in a thread a couple of months ago. Then this thread. When my wife asks "why the kids are starving?", i'm gonna say "ask that bloody Discreet!"

Soundclips aren't that great for making amp choices imo. You really have to be in the room with one, though I do understand that's not always possible. Ask Thunderbird, I think he's had one for the longest time. I'd make a clip, but I don't have a BVT currently. Though I may get another just for the hell of it. :)

With the gain right up there is not a huge amount of growl but I like my sound clean anyway. The EQ is nice and gets you a variety of sounds so at such a cheap price I am happy.
Thanks for the advice.
I like a lot of growl and a lot of gain, but no distortion, so may stay away.

Or put my Zoom B1ut, or whatever it's called (impulse buy on here, that i don't really use anymore) and see what i can do with it.
